If you read the entire thread then you'll know that your previous post shouldn't have been aimed at me because I already made my point about what you brought up, you should have have quoted the OP and not me...

I'm sorry to labour the point. but you clearly stated:

RBS do have a responsibility to make sure that they give credit cards to people with the financial ability to pay it back.

    And then:

you have a genuine complaint though for unethical business practices on behalf of RBS.

In both of those posts, you are (to my mind) implying that RBS are at fault and guilty of bad or (to quote you) "unethical business practices".

I was merely pointing out that this isn't a given as RBS base their decision on the information provided to them at the point of application and that being on a pension shouldn't instantly mean that any lending decision is "unethical" and neither should it preclude one from having a credit card.
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

oh crap my mom is also a pensioner and to my knowledge had 3 credit cards! Can i take it upon myself to decide that she is not mentally competent enough to have these and complain about it to the issuing banks?

To the OP i would suggest your dad needs to look at his finances, minimum payement on that debt would be less than £20 per month, or £4.62 per week only

I have just found out RBS sold him a credit card and he has run up a £500 bill. He is struggling to pay this back
If he'd have gone to the bookies, bet £500 and lost, would you complain to them?

If he went to Morrisons, bought a load of food that he was allergic to, would you complain to them?

What about if he went down the pub, and (soberly) agreed to buy their old dartboard for £500? Would you complain then?

In any instance, he is legally of sound mind, so legally should pay it back.

I'd be interested to know if this is a case that the man bought the stuff wholely knowing he'd have to pay it back, and is now trying to wriggle out of it, or in the nicest way possible, if he's a bit thick and thought it was "free money"?
