Hi, really need some help with my internet. Ok downstairs I have my orange adsl wireless router, which works great but I can’t pick up the wireless signal up stairs in my office.
I have run an Ethernet cable up thought the floor in to the office. I have plugged one end of the cable in to the orange netgear router and put the other end in to a dlink dsl router.
All the lights on the dlink router come on and show it should be working. I am unable to connect to the dlink router either wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable.
Please could anybody help me, its driving me mad........ Thank you

One possibility is that the Dlink router is configured with an IP address that is not in the same subnet as the rest of your network (e.g. if your Orange router has an IP of say 10.0.0.1 and the Dlink is on 192.168.0.1 then they won't be able to see each other).
Are both still on their factory default addresses? If so, a quick check of the documentation that came with them should reveal what their default IP addresses are.
One other thing that can cause major problems is if both routers are set to provide a DHCP server, because you can then end up with two separate populations of PCs on your network which may not (depending on address ranges being used by each router) be able to see each other. Only one should be operating as a DHCP server.0 -
yeah both are still on their factory standard settings...0

Ok, then you need to find out what their default addresses are (often printed on the underside of the router itself). Once you know that, you can open a browser, connect to the management interface of the Dlink router, turn off its DHCP server function and either give it a static IP address, or enable its DHCP client - which means that it should then get an IP address from the Orange router.0 -
thank you, your a star will try and let you know....0

If you set them both to use the same subnet and the same SSID , but different channels they should work. +1 on this. You're creating problems that don't need to be created if you can just plug the PC in directly to the Sky router via the RJ45 socket rather than using wireless. Connecting it up wirelessly via a repeater (which is what you are currently attempting) is somewhat more complicated.just plug the cable into the pc, and forget about the second router.
Also, the Sky Netgear router access is at 192.168.0.1 (as previously mentioned) but the default access is :-
Username: admin
Password: sky0 -

No-one mentioned either router was a sky one....the netgear was from orange - but don't know if it's standard netgear fw or ISP-frigged. It's worth pointing out that a lot of the popular netgears can't operate in bridge mode, e.g. DG834GT won't, so if your setup is going to work, yo'll have to keep the layout as-is.
p.s. RIK, you having trouble sleeping at the mo?
