Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Daughter just had new alternator fitted, running fine, but garage said it must be losing water somewhere, and to make sure it's kept topped up - what's all that about?

Any advice much appreciated.

Presumably he meant topping up the radiator?

    Worst case scenario:head gasket.£££££

Take the top off the oil cap,and look for a mayonnaise type gunge. If that is what you see, then the most likely cause is the head gasket.

But have a check around the engine bay, when the engine is running, and see if you can see any obvious leaks.I'm talking about hoses here,as one may have a split in it,and is cheap to replace.

birdy, mayonnaise will be in the oil filler cap and there will be smoke coming from the exhaust. Also check if the expansion bottle is boiling and if temp guage is high, might be faulty thermostat or fan switch, both cheap to replace. If the head gasket's gone, nurse it to the nearest scrap yard!!!

Hello quinny, glad to see it's not just me who spends half their life editing!!
  • The first thing i would do would be to contact the garage that told her this and ask them what they mean!!
