You obviously have not GOOGLED ! seems plenty of information and freebie.0

I think it is quite complex to go from mp3 to midi successfully as midi is more of a software programme in itself used to control synthesised instruments.
Maybe I'm wrong and some expert will know better though!0 -
this method seems perfect enough http://www.ehow.com/how_5143729_convert-mp-midi-open-source.html0

What a useful post!
The person that this is for said they had Googled it and when they downloaded a program that it kept giving them pop ups and wouldn't work. Hence I thought it was best to ask for a personal recommendation from someone on here in the know!0 -
We downloaded three programs last night and none of them worked. Has anyone got any more suggestions which are useful/relevant?0

Your quest is similar to converting a photo of a cake into a recipe for it.
Although MP3 files are stored digitally they are in the final analysis just time sampled analogue information and you'd need a fantastically complex program to produce a midi file from one.
Not long back this very requirement used to be treated as a joke. It may be possible in a few years time but right now I don't think it is.
This is probably the most informative result from that let me google that for you link above - http://www.skytopia.com/project/articles/mp3-to-midi.html0 -
I'd say it's impossible with all but the most simple mp3.
mp3 includes data about the SOUND of the music.
MIDI includes data about the music itself - notes, time values, rests, key signatures.
For a complex piece, it's impossible to derive what should go where. If you have a melody line in the mp3 played by first a violin, then by a clarinet, then by a trumpet, and finally by a piano, how would you divide these up into 4 MIDI instruments?
What do you need the MIDI file for?0 -
It occurred to me in the original post that here may be a particular requirement, but in listening terms why someone would want to go from a sylph like Mini Cooper to an obese old school bus beats me !
Is the O/P after the notation ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
