if it for a mobile phone ringtone then just use one of the free ringtone sites. midi ringtones

MIDI includes data about the music itself - notes, time values, rests, key signatures.

For a complex piece, it's impossible to derive what should go where. If you have a melody line in the mp3 played by first a violin, then by a clarinet, then by a trumpet, and finally by a piano, how would you divide these up into 4 MIDI instruments?

What do you need the MIDI file for?

This is not for myself but for a friend. I never thought of asking them what they wanted it for.

As I am sure you will now have read it is for my friend not me. I do not listen to music much never mind worry about what format it is in.

If the friend needs the MIDI file for some musical application, then I suggest googling for

"song title+MIDI"

might do the trick....
