I have 4 normal plug sockets in my main bathroom. It took a wee while to get used to.

Now I can make tea and toast while in the bath!

If you were still in the City you could have thrown a duvet in the bathroom with the toaster and kettle and you can let it out as a ''executive corporate Mon-Fri residence'' and taken a bath at the weekend.

...but at least people in USA are allowed a plug socket in the bathroom :)

Im sick of our government not allowing me to plug in my shaver in the bathroom just because some Darwin Award winner electrocuted themselves in the 60's. Dont see why I should be assumed a danger to myself just because other people are.

One aspect of life the USA have got spot on I reckon.

Loads of European countries have plug sockets in their bathroom and very near to the kitchen/kitchenette sink.

I remember some European friends looked at me weirdly when I said that in the UK people had to be told by government campaigns not to store their bleach and other cleaning chemicals in bottom cupboards so young children wouldn't drink them.

That annoys me too. We do have a single 110v shaver socket in my bathroom, so I bought US appliances to get round it. America has a lot of things right. I quite like going there and buying paracetemol in tubs of 500 for £3. They last several years and I never run out of pathetic packs of 8 when I have a headache. To bring this thread back on track, I've even got enough space in my kitchen to store my massive tub of paracetemol/aceteminophine too.

That's because if everyone had large tubs of paracetamol in their kitchen they would overdose on them as some idiot would think they were a cooking ingredient.

That's true for blocks of flats in Poland, never could understand why anyone would want to live in one! My parents could not have understood too, so self-built a 3-bed at the beginning of 80s. Now the arhitecture looks dated, but the house was completely renovated abound 4-5 years ago. This house was around 150 sq meters, not sure how many sq yards it is, but I think that most of the 3-bed in London are around 80 sq meter ;-)

I don't think most people wanted to, they didn't have much of a choice. The average income in the town when I was there was about £100 a month (400 new zloty).

You multiply sq. metres by 10 and add a bit - so 150 sq. metres is probably about 1,600 sq. ft

    A bath!!

All the apartments I've lived in abroad and stayed in where you could actually live, have only had showers. In fact the only apartments I've visited abroad with baths had 3+ bedrooms.

Foreigners find it amusing that in the UK we have little houses and flats but have a bath in the bathroom.

This Polish flat had a tiny bath, and no shower

Did you know, mainstream USian electrical shops don't sell kettles? You can ask, they can look at you like you're a loony.

So how do you boil a kettle in America, for tea / coffee / rice / etc? Stick a saucepan on the hob?

  • There is a lot of "stuff".

I hate handbags, but women's clothing so rarely has decent pockets.

I have a small, black leather rucksack. Very handy.

  • Did you have a toaster?

I remember my mrs had a tiny student flat kitchen, probably only about 3' x 4' off the main living room. Still they had a toaster ;)

I can't remember if we did or not.

We don't have a toaster in our flat, though.

If you need water boiled, people usually do it in the microwave. Coffee makers are all automatic, open the lid and pour in water - so no kettle needed there. Tea isn't anywhere near as popular there. If you need boiling water for a recipe, you boil it on the stove (hob).

I had a kettle when I lived in the US, it was a novelty to my friends.
