BT Landline Contracts

Hi, I've been living in a property for a couple of years without a landline (mobile + mobile broadband have sufficed) and I want to get a line with BT.
I've plugged a phone in and have a dial tone, I've done 17070 and found my number so I assume I don't have to pay for connection.
Am I right in thinking that the minimum term is 12 months and that a calling package is mandatory?
The "Unlimited Weekend Calling Plan" is "free" but after the 12 months does it auto-renew for another 12 months or does it revert to 1 month notice?
Thanks

You don't have to reconnect with BT, you can pick many other providers...
BT bundles a call package with all it's line rental tariffs. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
For a line only, take a look at IDNet, they do line rental only with 30 day contracts.
Excellent company as well.0 -

Remeber that the penalties for ending BT contracts have been reduced substantially recently so signing up for 12 months is not too much of a problem.

Great information.
I wasn't aware that the costs for ending early had been reduced so much.
It's not so much the 12 months that bother me but an auto-renewing contract. However, given the cost of ending it early, I suppose it's not much of an issue.
Thanks0 -
I have four months left on my 12 month contract. I shall be moving to a new home in the new year and wish to swap to virgin.
I have heard horror stories of being taken to court if you end your contract early! Can anyone tell me the best way to approach Bt and what the likely costs are to terminate the contract early.
I live in a rental property at the moment, I was thinking of just barring the outgoing calls and paying the monthly line rental until the contract expires. (I will remember to cancel of course, before they rip me off for another 12 month contract!)0 -

Of course you can terminate early. But if so you will have to pay the ETC. They don't 'take you to court', but they will certainly trash your credit record if you do not pay.
The revised BT ETC's are shown in the link above. These relate to phone contracts only, and there will be separate charges if you wish to terminate a BT broadband contract early as well. Your broadband contract may well be 18m not 12. The broadband ETC would be the monthly charge x the months outstanding on the contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

What call package do you have with BT? If you only have free Weekend calls then the cost is £2 per month, other charges in the below link.
