So there's two of you and a one bed flat to heat.

There's a family of four in our house and a 3 bed house to heat. Our mortgage is £100 less than your rent. We can manage on £320 a week.

Yes, but what happens when the work stops for me, and we would then have £150 a month after rent, which is the same amount as council tax and electric bill!
  • You still haven't said if you're an HE student and get a loan/grant/bursary.

I am, I get just over £3,000 a year loan, and no grant/bursary.

Yes we are getting the discount :) she does as much overtime as she can, however she is an artist and needs time to make artwork for exhabitions! It just seems everyone and their dog are entitled to something, well according to the news, but that doesnt seem to be the case!

No it isn't the case. I'm not "having a go" or in any way trying to belittle you, but we are a married couple, my OH has worked all his life, and me for a big part of it. We don't get anywhere near that amount for our retirement pensions. We would be overjoyed if we had £320 a week to live on.
So no, "the world and their dog" aren't entitled to something, even when as, in our case, you have paid into the system for 50 years.

Yes, I understand that we can live on £320 a week, however I could lose my job and we would then have £180 a week and would still not be entitled to anything.

I didnt mean to offend by my comments, it was just on the news last night, they said that a single mum would expect over £16k a year in benifits!

I wasn't offended by your comments at all, that's why I put that I wasn't having a go at you. All I was trying to do was to highlight that there are a heck of a lot more people living on a lot less than you 2 are.
The 16k per year you quoted for a single mum, they must be refering to one with more than one child.
  • I agree that there are alot of people that are living on a lot less, it would just be nice to receive something :)

Other than your heavily subsidised education?
I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I agree for you, yes you would like more! When you've finished Uni, and you start work, please make sure you put something away for your old age, otherwise you'll find yourself back to square one lol....:rotfl:

Adding up the £3k you get and £180/week and £140/week, annually that works out to £19640, which is a lot.

Annualising it, then splitting it back down to monthly, it would work out at:
£700/month after tax for the £180 job
£580/month for the £140 job (no tax)
    £250/month for the £3k loan
    ====
£1530 per month in your hand.

That's really not that shabby at all.
