Trying to decide and wade thru the gas/elec minefield

I could do with some help/advise regarding gas and electricity providers please - it's so confusing.

I have my electricity with edf on the sco20:20 which we are really happy with and have been for the last couple of years, so don't want to move.

The area I am now struggling with is gas, especially since BG has said that from 10th Dec they ae putting their prices up. I am currently on the BG Websaver 7 tariff. For year 2009, I used 5752kw. I am trying to figure out if I am better off moving my gas to edf and go dual fuel or if there is another provider or different bg tariff that would save us money.

Any advise would be greatly appreicated.

  • In terms of other providers, I'd wait and see because they'll be putting their prices up too - except EDF who will no doubt increase their prices around march time.

Thank goodness comparison sites exist to make comparisons so much easier ;)

Well BG say they are going to put up prices by 7% on average.

Using your figures, it appears that you could be saving over 30% if you switched to Scottish Power Online paying by quarterly Direct Debit (since you'll get £100 prompt payment discount)

Not sure whether those figures include the latest increase (I presume not, but you can check, and if they don't you'll save even more unless SP put their prices up)

So at the moment SP is the better, but more than likely they will be putting their prices up to to follow suit. What are your opinions on moveing the gas to EDF seeing that they have said they will not put the prices up until at least march. And even then if they do, I could possible be better off still - what are your thoughts on this too.

Scottish Power come nowhere near as high in savings as edf from all the comparison sites I have tried AND edf give you £100 back if you join before the end of November. It's a no brainer, even with standing charges.

Which comparison sites have you tried?

I used energyhelpline that suggests the OP is currently paying £263 per year

Scottish Power could supply the same for just £183 per year (31% saving)

The cheapest EDF product would cost £273 per year.

The OP can't get £100 EDF cashback unless they are prepared to change their current electricity tariff.

As I said, I'm not sure if the savings quoted actually include the forthcoming price increase by BG.

Even if they do, it's unlikely SP will increase their prices by >30% (if at all) ;)

And why wouldn't SP increase, how do you know that ?

He didn't say they wouldn't increase their prices, he said they wouldn't increase them more than 30% so that they will still be cheaper than BG.
