Is it worth claiming for my stolen phone?

I had my lovely iphone 4 stolen from my bag a few days ago  and I wanted to know if I made a claim on our house insurance policy with Hiscox whether it would be likely to push up our premiums & ultimately cost us more, and whether I should try to absorb the (£450!) cost myself?

Thanks!
nothing to see here, move along...

  • It depends on the excess from you home insurance as well if there is any protected ncd like car insurance?
It will have an effect on your insurance, but probably no one can tell you how much it will effect.

Like the previous posts said you need to see what the Policy excess is on your Policy.

You then need to see whether you have earnt any no claims bonus on your policy and if you have, what would happen to that bonus if you claimed. The Insurance Company Customer Service should be able to tell you this and it should be in the Policy Booklet you should have.

Then you need to work out (roughly) how many years it would take you to get back up to the bonus you have now (assuming no further claims) and how much that would cost you. Not an exact science by any means but you could roughly work it out on this year's premium - just note that this wouldnt take into account any rating increases over the next few years.

If you havent any no claims bonus you need to find out from customer service how much they would load your premium for the claim.

You then need to take the two figures - the one that you are claiming for and the one that it will cost you in excess and loss of no claims bonus and you should be able to see whether it is worth claiming or not.

    Hope that helps.

You could do a couple of anonymous online quotes - 1 with the claim, and 1 without. See what the difference in the premium is and you will know if it's worth claiming.

Bear in mind that most quotes are only valid for between 30 - 90 days so prices may change when your renewal is due.

In fact most companies will ask you to declare any losses whether claimed for or not.
