No Claims Protection confusion

Hi,
This is probably a basic answer, but there is something I'm not getting so would appreciate an explanation.
My car insurance is due for renewal and I have built up 9 years of no claims discount. Each year I tend to change insurance provider and go with the cheapest.
Bearing this in mind, is it still worth paying the extra for NCB protection? My confusion surrounds changing providers, as if I had a claim this year and wanted to change providers, I would still have to declare the claim, therefore would they take any notice of a protected NCB with a different provider? Surely they would not give me 9 years no claims, just because I had chosento pay my old provider a bit more cash!? Therefore would I then be locked into the current provider who could potentially charge whatever premium they want regardless of the NCB?
Any clarification gratefully received

You can transfer the NCD to other insurers, however most insurers normally accept 5 yrs no claims as the highest discount figure.
But you still need to pay the ncd protection to the new insurer if you want that cover, ncd protection is not transferable like NCD.
*yes the new insurer will take your protected ncd protection from your previous insurer, your full ncd remains.
Yes you have to declare all accidents/claims to any insurance company. NCD protection is a personal choice, I choose to pay for that as if I was
in the unfortunate position to make a claim then my ncd would go down by 2 years, this will result quite a bit of increase in premium. Use cashback sites like quidco topcashback to cut down cost too.0
