Second hand car faulty.

As above really, car is faulty 2 months old 9k it cost us, major engine faults by the looks of it.

Local garage said it was probably on it's way out when we got it as it's running hot.

Garage where we bought it has asked us to get it back to them, it's 3 hour drive away this is going to cost us £100's in towing fees and again in hire car, we are looking at 1k really before we start.

We still don't know if they are going to even foot the bill for repairs yet, what do we do? As the repairs are going to run into thousands as a conservative guess.

You have to get the car to the selling garage so that they can have a chance of repairing it. I would be getting someone you trust or the AA/RAC to have a look so you know roughly what is wrong before you deliver it back.

Why oh why do so many folk travel miles to buy a car!
  • Thanks, maybe because people move house? Anyway had the RAC out, and had it in the local garage, it's a water pump, thermostat or total engine failure. Either way it's a grande espace the whole engine needs to come out, it's a big job. The dealer does not want it fixed here as the labour rates are too high....

  • Do you know how much grande espaces are worth obviously not, thanks for the help.

It's not a ford KA

Used cars are classed as anything that have been pre registered so 9k on a used car is not all that unusual.....

You have to take the whole engine out for a water pump or thermostat? That makes no sense, you are in essence stating that everytime the cambelt was changed the whole engine would have to come out?

Yep because there is no room to work in the engine bay so the engine has to be dropped out, it's well known so we expected it but none of this should have been on it's way out or needed doing for another 60k... So we knew repairs would be expensive and calculated this in to our costs when getting the car, but not for it to be so quickly! It should not need doing for yonks.

We run 2 cars you see, and pay what we have for everything, no wish to get into debt for a car, so for an espace we had to go the 2nd hand route not new.

But meh garage are looking at their recovery policies now and are being very reasonable it seems...so panic over for now it would seem...
  • Tinkerbell,

To change the waterpump, the cambelt will need to come off. Which if your going to remove the belt, you may well change the belt & tensioners at the same time. Something that could work in your favour to save on costs in the future.

Might be something to consider as i seem to remember cambelts are 72,000miles or 5 years..

Though, if you dont ask, no doubt the dealer will refit the original cambelt..

dump your car at the garage
1 demand your money back plus towing fees
2 tell them your going to phone head office (if they have got one)
3 The car can be return after 28 days (law)
4 Stand outside and tell future customers what happen to you.
Do this for a day or 2 it will be worth it to get the 7 grand you paid for the car.
    ps
bring a friend and film it on your mobile .

It's a shame they've had it 2 months (what law BTW?) and it cost 9k then!
