Also, because of the cobbled streets at the top end of Lincoln, may be a little uncomfortable for wheelchair users if they have to use the road instead of the pavement (my mum went once but couldn't stand the pain the cobbles gave her bottom!)

Tell me about it! I made the mistake of going to Lincoln for first proper day out after 5 months laid up with a broken ankle.. OW! You never appreciate flat streets so much as when every cobble bends something that doesnt want to be bent :P

i am from lincoln and the market is an excellent one, it does cause a little upheavel on some local roads for us but i have to admit i think it is worth it ;)
It does get very busy so if you are not into crowds then maybe not for you.
We have all the traditional stalls selling mulled wine(proper stuff by the germans), hot chesnuts etc.... then there is kids rides, hundreds of stalls etc....
Don't think you would be disapointed.

During the day on Friday is quietest (relatively) - Sat Night is VERY busy.

Fantastic Market though - great atmosphere and not overly "commercial" - nice City too (I'd agree - stay over night).

Having spent a few years living in Germany and going to their various Christmas markets which I thought was fantastic,

I am now living just outside of Lincoln and agree with the above posters that it is a great market but please take notice of the warnings of busy times, steep hills etc,

Wear comfy shoes and you will not be dissapointed

I have always wanted to see the one at worcester

    From their website
    Nov 30, 2006 -
Dec 03, 2006 Worcester Christmas Fayre. The Midlands' most prestigious Victorian themed street market. The finest Christmas crafts, gifts, food and entertainment.
  • Hi
York does some lovely things at Christmas, see the website http://www.yuletideyork.com/

    There are markets:

Childrens Christmas Fayre From 17 Nov 2006 to 19 Nov 2006
German 'Christkindlesmarkt' From 01 Dec 2006 to 17 Dec 2006
Made In Yorkshire Crafts at Christmas From 01 Dec 2006 to 10 Dec 2006 Christmas Farmers' Market From 16 Dec 2006 to 17 Dec 2006

a special market called St Nicholas' Fayre:

    From 23 Nov 2006 to 26 Nov 2006
Visit Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square, Kings Square, and Coppergate Square for a range of open air stalls selling a variety of products.

Details of who exactly will take part in St Nicholas Fayre remains for the moment a secret but to give you a taster, regular features include…
    § Hand painted glass gifts
    § Hand made jewellery
    § Pottery and crafts
§ Russian dolls and other collectables
    § Prints and photography
§ Wooden crafted models and gifts
§ Farm raised venison, ostrich & wild boar
§ Traditionally hand made cheeses & dairy products
§ Punch, Beer, Wine, & Mulled Wine
    § Pies & pastries
Not to mention the carol singers, the brandy-laced hot chocolate and the chestnuts roasting on the street corner of course…!

    and a festival of angels:

    From 09 Dec 2006 to 10 Dec 2006
The Festival of Angels is a two-day outdoor free festival organised by traders in the small area of York city centre called 'The Quarter' as a thank you to all their customers over the previous year.

The area is closed off to traffic and a series of ice sculptures are placed along the streets, along with outside food and drink stalls, some street entertainment, and everything is dusted with snowflakes which fall from the upper storeys of the buildings.

The Parade of Angels walks through the city centre during the festival and all children, big or small, are invited to join (with or without angel wings!). Times and meeting point to be confirmed nearer the time.

The Festival is a favourite with York residents and visitors and it's a relaxing break from the hectic side of Christmas, full of the spirit of Christmas.

There is also an ourdoor icerink from 18 Nov 2006 to 07 Jan 2007, not to mention the endless concerts/music events all over town.

    HTH, have a good time

I believe that Bourton on the Water has a sort of Christmas event at the beginning of December - people dressed in Vicotrian clothes etc. You could try looking on their website for more details.

Never been myself, though, so don't know how good it is.

If you want to get in the mood early, there's a christmas fayre on at the Newark and Notts Showground next weekend (28th-29th Oct)

It should be great - I'm launching my Story Sack/Toy business there and it should be a great family day out. They are having face painting and a special apperance from Garfield! My DD will love it!

I'm just a bit annoyed I won't get to look around as I'll be too busy (hopefully!) selling my story sacks! YEY I'm so excited!

Lincoln Market is great, however I hate crowds and it was HEAVING when I went... if you don't mind that, then It's great.

I think the centre of nottingham has a German market every chrimbo... not sure of dates, they have Gluwine ...yummy! And loads of lovely german toys (I grew up in germany, so it reminds me of when I was little :D )

Hope this helps...And I hope to see some of you at the showground ;)
    £2 Savers club started 30/09/06.... £I raided it :(
    Random coin jar = £35.51

  • Cheltenham has a magical xmas market. Its all in little wooden huts with loads of lights in the trees. Its on the promenade and they do a big thing with turning on the lights with santa etc. Loads of people go and its really lovely. They have hotdog stands, bailey hot chocolates, mulled wine and loads more. I can't wait this year!!!!
