PAYG Gift Advice

Hiya,
I want to buy my Dad a new handset for Christmas. I only want to spend £40-£50. He's currently on O2 and will want to stay on this network. I'm fairly sure he'll want to keep his number too (this might be negotiable though!).
I've always been on contract so PAYG is a bit of a mystery to me...
1. Can I buy a handset, within my price range, without having to take on a new number and top up?
2. If I buy, for example, through Quidco to get cashback, will I have to register the phone in my name for the cashback to be successful?
3. Anyone got any recommendations on decent phones in the £40-£50 price bracket? He's not the sort who'd just want a basic 'old person's' phone (he's only 61!) but wouldn't be bothered about having too many whistles and bells.
Sorry if these are silly questions but I really haven't got a clue! Any advice gratefully received, thanks

1. Can I buy a handset, within my price range, without having to take on a new number and top up? Yes you can buy a handset in that price range but it will comw with a sim card and a £10 top up. Dad can use his own sim, though, and could ask network to transfer credit from new sim. Failing that, use new sim for 0844 number calling.
2. If I buy, for example, through Quidco to get cashback, will I have to register the phone in my name for the cashback to be successful? PAYG don't have to be registered in any one name, so you can put it in your name for Quidco purposes, but Dad can use phone.
3. Anyone got any recommendations on decent phones in the £40-£50 price bracket? He's not the sort who'd just want a basic 'old person's' phone (he's only 61!) but wouldn't be bothered about having too many whistles and bells. Look at Nokias. Their call volume is better than Sony and, with PC Suite (free) Dad can easily transfer and back up his contacts using a PC

O2 do pay and go upgrades. So it may be best to give him some money for a phone. He can do the upgrade at either an O2 store or Carphone Warehouse.
At best he will get a discount and cv worst he won't have to buy the extra credit.0
