its 50 squared metres. just had a quote of £600 to remove old turf and replace with a layer of top soil and new turf. does this seem reasonable?

...and goto your local library and get the latest edition of Lawn Expert by D G Hessayon (or buy it via amazon etc)..it tells you all you need to know, when you should be doing what jobs on it etc (more to it than just unrolling the turf...if you want a decent lawn anyway!)

Good book. A lot of the book is about restoring existing lawns back to health - you might be able to salvage what you've already got.
  • When we had work done which wrecked the lawn ,we didn't bother removing the existing lawn we just put the topsoil on top of the existing lawn, levelled it out and laid the new turf on top. It is fine now.
  • very diificult to price without seeing the layout and levels and what type of soil you have buut if height isnt a issue then best to to skim off existing lawn then rotovate and import some decent top soil ,level, compact then fluff the top surface to give the turfs something to knit to i would say 2 days work for 2 people hire of rotovator in my area £60 per day top soil is apx £20 per ton and then its your choice of lawn depending on its use will there be kids playing is it ornamental i have used 2 very good turf suppliers and they will help you chooce the correct lawn ,the first i used in my own garden and was a very good hard wearing but very green lawn,,
