Who knows, maybe I got lucky.
But it's always best to invest in places which are moving up the ladder, rather than down.
Saying that even my Hendersons City of London has done quite well.
I'm sure many have done much better though.
And good for you. Thing is, depending on your viewpoint, you might never have to "get lucky" on housing. In 2001 I doubt whether many thought that prices were too high so you could reasonably have anticipated making a fair amount over 10 years without any risk - that would have suited my more risk averse nature better. Having said that I am risk averse I would still say that even if you bought now you would be very likely to make a fairly substantial sum between now and 2021 - I know that many disagree though (and that's why the forum is interesting). What's not interesting though is when people who could have bought for £60k less in 2005 come on and say that they are better off - that's really hard to accept - at least I don't think its geneerally accepted.0

It couldn't be me next. I make my own life choices and accept the consequences, sometimes good sometimes bad.
Well that wasnt quite what happened. I moved out of my family home into a rented city centre flat. Mostly to get away from them, and also to see if I liked a flat having been used to detached houses.
Next thing prices are going up 10% a year, which I think is crazy and cant last. I find housepricecrash which is full of people who equally think its crazy and strive to explain why prices will crash.
Now obviously they were wrong, and so was I. It has become quite clear it was all wishful thinking, I tried to become the voice of doubt at that forum, at this point it makes very little difference to me as I have started my own business and a slightly bigger than average house (4 bed) is now about 2.5x my salary.
If you have an idea, and everyone around you agrees with the idea it all becomes very convincing. Kinda like a cult I guess.
The fact that the moderators themselves believe in the cult to this degree is kinda scary, I mean banning anyone from posting who disagrees? What is the point of posting on subjects where everyone has to agree, where is the debate? Its not surprising that the number of people viewing that forum is declining so much.
I think everyone who posts on there would be a lot better using their time to better themselves, and therefore increase their income than hoping, praying, wishing for prices to fall. For me, if I'd bought a house in 2001 (when I was planning to). I would be hugely worse off now.
If I had bought the house I like now, which now is about £200k, it would have been £100k back then. Would be pretty much paid for by now. So id be mortgage free with a massive disposable income. Sigh.0

It's obsolete now. A bit like this place.
House prices aren't going anywhere. I think we've established that. Slight drops here and there, offset by slight increases here and there... altogether flat.
Give it a few years and they will start increasing again.0

I decided to delete them off my laptop over a month ago.
They don't even have a decent argument anymore. I'm just glad I saw them crash and burn.We love Sarah O Grady0

Mate where do you live? Baghdad? :rotfl:Keep saving and in a few years time you might have saved up the deposit for a small place. No point in getting upset because you're desperate!0
