Cat D Car Insurance - help!

I've recently crashed into the back of someone and so contacted my insurance company. The insurance company they said they wouldn't pay for the damage to my car and the other person's as my car was a category D and I hadn't declared it when I'd taken out the insurance. The thing is, when I entered all my details onto various comparison sites, I was not asked if the car was a cat d. I assumed that because I entered my reg no which brings up the details of the car, that the car insurance company would be aware of this and to be honest, it never crossed my mind that I'd have to declare this as the person I bought the car off said I'd have no problem insuring it??? Also, surely because the car has an MOT certificate, this proves the car is roadworthy. However I was completely honest about my partners points and all our history as I'm more than aware how insurance companies will try to get out of paying up. So I've argued it out with them and they are paying out, however they said they cancel my insurance with immediate effect. So I need help with the following:
1. I only took out the insurance in September and paid in full so am I entitled to some money back?
2. Which insurance companies insure cat d cars?
Thanks, Nino.

Which insurance company are you with ?
WSwift by any chance?0 -
Hi, yes Swift! How did you know?0

Since they (the insurance) has paid out, you will probably not be entitled to any money back - sorry.0

Yes but I've paid for the full year yet they've only insured me for 2 months out of the 12 months I've paid for? How does that make sense - surely I should get a refund for the remaining months?0

Because the policy has paid out - it's done what it says on the tin, also what have they said about cancelling your policy? Are they saying they have cancelled it for non-disclosure, in which case you have to declare this in the future, which is going to hit you in the pocket as well.
Regards the refund you are best speaking to the insurance company.0 -
Thanks for you reply but they said they're cancelling it because the don't insure cat d cars. But why wasn't I asked if it was Cat D at any point when taking out the insurance? I declared all my partners points, sent copies of our driving licences etc etc. I was completely honest so surely they cannot cancel it due to non-disclosure as they didn't ask me that specific question and I didn't know I had to declare it? Do you know if I can fight this? Also, if I've paid them for the whole year and it wasn't a cat d car, then wouldn't the car insurance still apply for the rest of the year?0

they never ask, but think they expect people to call and disclose. the reason they dont like them is insurance compnys have already paid out on the write off, so the car is worth 50% of its value0

But they do tell people clearly on their website- presumably where the quotation was taken out that they do not insure Cat D vehicles. The op would had to have agreed that she had read this prior to buying it.0

I got the insurance from a comparison website - it didn't direct me to their own website so I never saw that they didn't insure cat d cars - I would definitely NOT have taken it out under false pretences.0

I would be more worried about the fact that your company are cancelling your insurance to be honest ! This is a much bigger problem !
You will have to declare to all future potential insurers that you have had insurance cancelled and this will play havoc when you try to get a policy ! Lots of companies will refuse to insure you you and any that do will load the premium . You also wont be able to use the online comparison sites to get quotes.
Personally i would be trying to stop swift cancelling the insurance! Do what ever it takes but do try to avoid the cancellation. The loopy one has gone :j0
