Edinburgh - Hidden Gems?

This thread has given me some good ideas for when I go up to Edinburgh next month. So, thanks!
I was thinking of having a day trip out of the city one day to experience a bit of Scottish countryside. Specifically, catching the train to Glasgow, then a bus out to Loch Lomond (link), heading back to Glasgow for the evening. A good plan?
Why go to Edinburgh if you're looking for days out on the opposite side of the country....?
There's plenty of countryside to see around Edinburgh without going through Glasgow.
East Lothian one day, Midlothian the next, West Lothian on a third. Strike out up to Fife or down to the Borders if you want more days out of the city.
East Lothian - Catch the train to North Berwick, walk on the beach, walk up Berwick Law, visit the Seabird Centre. Loads of walks along the coastal trail.
Midlothian - Bus out to Roslyn, solve the Da Vinci Code.
West Lothian - Falkirk Wheel
Another day, take the bus to Peebles. Lots to do and see around there.
etc etc0 -
im making my way up tomorrow, thanks for all your suggestions again.
Hopefully get to try some of them out
if i can drag myself out of the sheep heid!! :T:T:T0 -

Well I hadn't really thought about it too carefully to be honest. I don't know the area surrounding Edinburgh, and Loch Lomand just came to mind. Also, I was planning to return on the Caledonian Sleeper (which leaves from Glasgow or Edinburgh), so I wouldn't have to get back to Edinburgh that day. However, some of the suggestions you given me sound good... so perhaps Loch Lomand is best left for another day! I'll do a bit of research.bumblesquatt wrote: »im making my way up tomorrow, thanks for all your suggestions again.

East Lothian - National Museum of Flight at East Fortune! I have no grudge agianst the East coast but I would recomend the OP takes their own biscuits

Jump on a train to South Queensferry - 10 mins on train and check out forth road bridge - can get boat trips and nice lunch at orocco pier hotel. http://www.oroccopier.co.uk/
Or if you are there between Mon & Fri a trip out to Linlithgow and a Michelin star restaurant where you can get a lunch for £19.50(plus 10%) . A bit pricey for a lunch - but hey its a Michelin star restaurant famed for its steaks - best book though http://www.champany.com/news/permalink/our-new-quick-supper-menu-3950/
Or if you are going further afield jump on the train and go to Stirling (45 mins) and visit the wallace monument http://www.nationalwallacemonument.com/
But to be honest there is plenty to do in Edinburgh.0 -
well what can i say, another fantastic weekend in this wonderful city!!
Ate VERY well :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Ate at the city cafe (great americanny diner and the food was good)
Mussel Inn which is a lovely seafood place which is very reasonably priced.
We ordered pizza one night as the apartment we stayed in was so good. It turned out to be probably the best pizza delivery food i have ever had. This was from a place called La Favorita.
Had a good wander round the city centre. Walked to the Sheeps Heid in duddingston. It is a lovely walk round arthurs seat, quite bracing because of the weather, but very much worth it. Duddingston is a lovely little village and the Loch is beautiful. Saw the fattest pheasant i have ever seen! it was like a dog!!!!
The Sheeps Heid is a cosy old style pub with a great atmosphere. So great, we stayed in the place for 6 hours and enjoyed some haggis, neeps and tatties!!! We then retired downstairs and let our food digest over several drinks and a few games of connect 4, which i lost most of :mad::mad: loved the place.
Had an afternoon out in Portobello, jeysus it was cold but I quite like the seaside when its windy and cold!! Watched the kite flyers on the beach and then had a wander round the town and shops.
Cant wait to go back. I would move there in a shot0 -
