I used Windows. I'm not aware of having a Sweex utility.

OK, i'm bit out of depth then, have you tried inssider and move from the pc to the router using it on a netbook/laptop and compare signal strengths. Also are all the machines using DHCP including the Blu-Ray Player ? I would suggest making the BD machine fixed and outside the range of the DHCP range

of course, it could just be that the sweex adapter is carp, and changing it for a better one will solve all the problems.....has happened on many an occasion :)

    Thanks again.

I contacted Sweex again after trying all their suggestions to no avail and their second reply suggests that it may be faulty so I am going to contact Play.com about a replacement.

I see that it has a Railink chipset according to the spec:-

    IEEE802.11b and IEEE802.11g support
    Maximum transfer speed: 54 Mbps
    Auto fallback
    Chipset: Ralink RT2571WF
Protection: WPA encryption, IEEE802.x encryption, TKIP/AES encryption,
    64/128/152-bit WEP encryption
Supports: Windows 98SE, 2000, XP and Vista

Hi just for quickness(?English ...)download HijackThis from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

Don't do anything with it other than sacn and post the log here it will show if it is using Railink, easier than posting how to check if it is .

Edit is ther a little green froglike thing on the task bar at the bottom of Windows

Ooops! I've taken out the wireless adaptor and reconnected the router.

I have emailed Play.com about getting a replacement, but might try it again over the weekend when I have more time.

I can't remember seeing a green frog-like thing on the task bar.

Play.com have offered me a refund rather than a replacement. I would have risked another Sweex as it has 4.5 stars for reviews. However it looks like I am one of the 1 star reviews.

Seeing as I can't get a replacement I have ordered a different brand and am hoping to have more luck with it.

Just hope I'm not back on here next week with the same problem................

Just as an addendum, then :D, cos I thought of this in the rub-a-dub this afternoon. It may be better if you set up the wireless replacement dongle to use a fixed IP address (read something similar in a mag down the pub, and that jogged my memory when I saw your latest post). Good luck and let us know how you get on. It's possible it could be due to DHCP lease time and have now made a Note (not mental, that doesn't work) to remember for other posters' probs.

How would I set it up to use a fixed IP address? My ISP gives a dynamic IP address which changes.

Fully replete now where was I ahh yes , no I meant the IP address of the Sweex Adapter , looking back I assume you know how to get into your router (channel change etc) look at the DHCP bit of the router and see which addresses it uses for DHCp (it wil be 192.168.x.yyy-zzz. Select an address outside that range (on mine I use .90 up to 254 maximum for fixed), don't need to do anything on the router. Now on the Vista pc with sweex on it open control panel/network and sharing centre. Change adapter settings and select the Sweex. right click and select properties. Highlight Internet Protocol V 4 and press properties. select use this IP address 192.168.00x.yyy (the x will probably 1 or 2 for your router and yyy will be the address you selected outside the DHCP range above. subnet mask 255.255.255.000 default gateway is 192.168.x.y (your router of course) ,
The the preferred DNS server is your router address again 192.168.x.y .

This gets round any problems with DHCP lease times. HTH
