Southern Electric Social Tarrif - BEWARE!!!

I have been on Southern Electric's social tarrif for a couple of years and qualified because I was spending more than 11% of my income on electriity (I don't have gas).

Recently I got a letter saying that I had to go through the qualifying process again and when I did I found out that this time I didn't qualify because they had raised the qualifying amount to 20% of my income.

I don't believe that anyone on a low income (Pension Credit, for example) is going to spend 20% of their income on fuel - they'll just go without so Southern Electric have basically put their social tarrif out of the reach of their most vulnerable customers.

It would be nice if Martin could investigate this. Thank you.

  • Stalwart,

Thanks for this, I've just posted over there. No idea what or who Ebico is, by the way.

No. Ebico don't offer social tariffs (i.e. ones that have pre-requisites)

All ebico tariffs are open to all residential customers and everyone pays the same price (subject to usual regional variations for electricity)

Ebico are a separate, small energy supplier who use SSE as their supply partner
More details available from their new design website:

Is it still the case that the social tariffs are never cheaper than the cheapest online deal so not really worth claiming?

Southerns Energyplus care tariff for Yorkshire is

ELECTRIC Standing charge 6.73p per day, Standard energy 7.82p per kwh + vat.

GAS Standing charge 10.69p per day, Standard energy 1.93p per kwh = vat.

I have never found another tariff that gets anywhere close to this .

Southerns Energyplus care tariff for Norweb is:

Energy prices are the same but

5.6175p per day electricity standing charge (vat included)
11.508p per day gas standing charge (vat included)

It isn't actually possible for new customers to get on Energyplus care.
