Can't get on-line after 4pm Help!

I would be grateful for any help here.
I am with Tiscali (Talktalk) and use their Siemens gigaset SE587 router for my mac G5.
I have contacted them about the intermittent nature of my broadband. One of their suggestions to to use an 'ethernet' extension lead instead of the phone one which I use now.
Should I buy one of these, or do I need some sort of upgrade of my service to compete with all the kids who log on as soon as they get out of school?
While the ADSL light is on, the 'on-line' light is pulsating now.
Thanks in anticipation

Plug in extension leads can be bad news because they carry a ring wire which you can't eliminate without resorting to butchery of the cable or fitting an iPlate.
It would help if you can run through just how you have it set up but I'm guessing that you have the router on a plugin extension. What they've have probably suggested is that you put the router close to the master socket and run ethernet from it to your PC instead. That is good advice. If you have any hard wired extensions you may want to consider using a filtered faceplate which will eliminate the ring wires from them or alternately you can just disconnect it. http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm
Whether or not that will solve your issues is questionable as you haven't said what actually goes wrong (disconnecting? slow?)0 -
Frequently slow, but often I can't even connect. Nothing will load - my e-mail signal is spinning, showing incoming, then i get a warning triangle.
As it is meant to be a wireless router, show the mac work without a lead of any sort.
Sorry if I am asking stupid questions.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

Can't comment on Macs, but Have you got filters on all your phones, including Sky if you have it. Also is the filter before the extension lead or after? Also why us an extension lead for router as you say the Mac is Wireless. I guess as its after 4 you may be slow responding

Thanks for all suggestions.
I am guessing that the wireless is not set up properly. If I can get it right I should be able to leave the router next to the main phone socket and use the mac in the study.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I doubt very much if your problems is anything to do with your wireless set-up. You can easily check this when it next happens by trying to log into your router. Enter http://192.168.1.1 into your browsers address bar and that will prove your own wireless network.
You are on the dreadful TalkTalk network and this is a very common problem - check their forum here
I believe that they may be using a rather too aggressive dynamic line management system to take the strain off their overloaded network, resulting in frequent disconnections. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I think the clue is in the original post-can't get online after 4pm...so it's got to be a contention issue surely? The suggestion is that it's OK before 4pm?
Or one of the neighbouring kids goes online at 4pm with his router on the same channel. Have you tried switching wireless channels on the router?
The first thing I would do is to make a temporary connection from router to Mac by ethernet, and then retest the line. If the problem remains, then clearly it's not a wireless issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I know this may sound absolutely crazy (it certainly did to me) but I had exactly the same issue with AOL a while back. Nobody could sort it out... Anyway, we had a street light which was flickering outside our house and as soon as the street lights came on the internet went down. When the light was fixed the problem went away.
Could be coincidence but you never know...0 -
Doesn't sound like a wireless issue.
Likely a security issue, as mentioned before, somebody could be accessing your wireless at 4 every day and abusing the connection, or it could just be that Tiscali are providing a terrible service from beyond the grave and you need to move to a better provider. Even moving to a "real" talk talk contract is apparently an upgrade over being with an old bought out Tiscali line.
I definitely give a vote for BT providing a stable service, no doubt you'll find people who have had issues though, I could be a minority and it can be quite location based.
As for setting up the wireless, you should have WPA encryption on your wireless or you are leaving it at risk.
I believe the BT home hub has that as standard, so moving to them may fix that issue on its own.0
