This sounds silly, but I didnt know you could claim for Avon, I am thinking of doing it but do you not have to earn some money first? Or can you just claim for the hours you put in, door knocking, admin and all of that?

The whole concept of self employment falls into two camps. The first is that you buy an ongoing business on a Friday and open up for trade on the Monday.
The second is starting from nothing. They say time is money, it certainly is. The more time you put into a business the more likely that it is to succeed.
How on earth do you think most businesses start. It starts with an idea, then that is developed into a product, the product sells and you make your money.

Of course in the early days you will no doubt put a hell of a lot of time in with no return. Getting customers, generating contacts etc. All of that work is part and parcel of being self employed.
Even when you are up and running all of the admin work is part of the business.

So yes if you want to try it out, get yourself registered with HMRC - they actually run some very good workshops which are free of charge.

Then keep a simple diary of the 'work' you do in order to prove the hours. It would not surprise me that going over 30 hours pw is quite possible. That will give a further increase in WTC.

If you think you can be your own boss, and are willing to work hard for little money in the early years - go for it!!

How do you think Richard Branson started. He was selling records etc over the telephone from a public telephone box! Nowadays there is the internet!

    Thank you Gemstar,

I have been considering Avon as I have beauty therapy (well qualification was from many years ago) behind me, I also have my own idea which I am not telling about! So regarding my own idea I think I will contact HMRC and to help earn something I may start Avon, good time of year to start that!
