Leaving Sky for Virgin Media - cancellation and co

Having been a Sky customer for well over a decade I have now decided that my need for Broadband is not adequately supported by Sky and so I have just had VM installed. My question is does anyone have experience in persuading Sky to cancel the service immediately rather than requiring the 31 days notice I have read about?

Also it has taken VM almost 6 months from my original install date to get my service up and running (I live on a larger modern housing development where cable was laid as houses were being built) - I feel I should be due considerable compensation. Does anyone have a success story to share regarding this? Not only have I missed out on having the service but I also incurred termination costs from BT that wouldn't have been had it gone ahead to the original schedule and I have not had the confidence to cancel Sky before now as there have been so many challenges with VM.

Thanks,

DP

They can cancel immediately, but you will still pay for the 31 days notice according to the terms of your contract, therefore no point?

So let me get this right..because your housing estate was being built when you ordered it & the ducting & street cabinets/cabling was being installed as the estate was being built & because you ordered the VM service before the network was installed & connected, you expect compensation?
The are other factors to take into account, wayleave permission, planning permission, changes in service installation, provisioning of network equipment, connection to the main network, other roadworks & permission for these in order to supply the service....
I could go on & on here.
IMHO as an ex VM Engineer you have no hope whatsoever in getting compensation for something that was more than likely held up by other factors. For example, the next town over from where I live has been fully cabled since 2003 &,as yet,the isn't a single home connected to the VM network.
VM can only start installing a estate when it has been released & fully comply with government regulations after all work has been completed.
  • Thank you for the insider knowledge and expertise Spike and I appreciate your loyalty to your previous employer - however perhaps my comment wasn't quite clear enough in content - my house was built in 2001 and the estate has been fully completed for a long time (at least 5 years). I also have neighbours with VM installed (some time ago).

Do you really think that 6 months is an acceptable period to wait? I am sure that most people would have cancelled long ago and remained with Sky!

Also is this not a Money Saving forum? You seem to imply that my desire for compensation after such a poor initial service (I would rather not go into details as I do not wish to be overly negative toward them) is in some way outlandish.

Thanks Anon - agreed that would make no sense at all. My thought was could I get them to cancel immediately and not have to pay for the 31 days notice?
  • They can do it. All depends on your powers of persuasion and who you speak to.

Ah...Well your initial post made it sound like the estate was being built, not that it was started nearly a decade ago..
In that case six months wait isn't on in all honesty, but the still may be issues that delayed it,issues such as the street cabinet being over subscribed, blocked street ducting ect,I have came across that many times in the past & if that is the case, then you should have been told.
Problem with VM is they made loads of us redundant & went down the contractor route for the installs & other work. (I was a fault tech)
As to the compensation, one does tend to get a bit peeved because in this day & age, when something goes wrong with whatever...compensation!

    Considerable compensation?

I am guessing you were not paying for the service you were not receiving so how can you be compensated when they cost you nothing? and you chose to wait 6 months, you could of gone elsewhere.

If my Indian Takeaway took 2 days to arrive I would have ordered elsewhere in the mean time, not starved.

I once ordered a chinese from my local take away,by the time it eventually arrived,I wasn't hungry anymore as I'd scoffed a big bag of KP while I was waiting...
