They are cutting their own throats at those prices !
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Hi all.

Should I get him to install a magnetic filter onto the system. He said they do work but its upto me to choose, He said there is a new one on the market that I can clean myself. He also said that boilers in the past didnt have these filters and ran perfectly fine, but they do keep the system clean.

They ran fine because they were big cast iron heat exchangers, your new combi will have small pressure pipes and very easy to block heat exchangers and will block up very easily. A good thorough system clean is THE most important part of your new install...your installer will jump at the chance of you doing it yourself as they can use it as an excuse to not have to attend any warranty repairs.
You seem to be guiding installers to give you the price you're after, many will do it but just be aware they are cutting and stripping bits off the job to reduce the cost and by going for a cheaper boiler you will be hit by much more expensive spare parts.
Hope you get it right and all goes well.
  • Hello Guys.

I now have 2 written quotes at the moment. Im still awaiting 2 more to be delivered. The 2 I have just now are ( I THINK ) a bit on the expensive side. The 2 quotes that Im still waiting for are the ones Im going to choose between. When I decided to get a new boiler installed, I did a bit of homework and read up on whats what. I admit that I dont know it all, but I know enough to not get ripped off. I didnt choose any old Engineers from yellow pages. I went to the Gas Safe Website, they have a handy wee tool that lets you search for local GS Registered in your local area. It gives you their contact details such as name, address and their Gas Safe Reg Number. So I hope I have done enough to not get ripped off.

The 2 quotes Im still waiting for are the ones I will make a final decision on. They both stay local to me, less than half a mile. They are self employed and work for themselves. So if anything does go titsup atleast I know where they stay. They both supplied references and one engineer has his own website. They sound like okay normal everday guys, they tell you how it is, not baffle you with tekno speak. As they work for themselves, then they want the work especially in this climate. They want to do a brilliant job for you, as they depend alot on word of mouth for future work. There is only fifty quid between the two verbal quotes, and they both say that they have work booked at least 3 weeks in advance, so they wont be able to start my installation until end of Nov beginning of Dec.

    My Written Quotes so far...

British Gas £3700 for new boiler installation. (BINNED)

    Local Guy £2430 Breakdown below.

Vokera Compact 29A with Vertical Flue Ext. £780
2 Concentric flue extension kit. £80
    Flue bend kit. £60
    Vertical weather slat. £20
    Condensate pump. £80
    Copper fittings. £105
Salus RF room stat and prog. £50
    5 Rad Valves. £70
    Chemical and Inhibitor. £35

    LABOUR.
    Electrician. £100
    Roofer. £100
    Gas and Plumbing. £700
    Magna cleanse and desludge. £250

    TOTAL. £2430

I still think its a wee bit steep for a boiler install. I will probably spend £15-1600 using one of the final 2 quotes, I will get magnetic filter installed also.

    Regards
    Scott
