Lol I know he hasn't got that one as he gives everything to me to sort, we weren't living together so I wasn't able to organise him like he is now :)

  • I apologise if you covered this in the article but was tax relief mentioned (it's not a deduction)? I know the tax system be complex and hard to cover it all. I'm a nurse and get tax relief on my NMC registration fees, professional journals, laundry and also get a shoe and sock allowance hence why my tax code is 664L rather than 647L. I'm aware that this applies to other professions too. Would this be a useful addition to the tool?
Life could be worse, you could be a nurse
  • I'm so grateful for this article. I had noticed that my tax code had changed from last year to this but thought that it was something to do with graduating from university. I would not have questioned the change if I had not read this!

My tax code 09/10 was 647L. It's now 164L, which is a big difference considering that the only thing in my life that has changed is graduation (which happened after the change); I have been working at my sole, part-time job for 18 months.

I'll give HMRC a call before work tomorrow and see what I can find out!
  • Hi,

Mine says: There's a difference of £215 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.
Tax code is 626L. I have one job, and I only get bonus above my basic salary. Does that mean I have to get in contact with HMRC?
Oh, by the way, what should I write under : For earnings (pre-tax)? My earnings before tax for what? year? month? 2weeks? I left it blank.
  • Tax code 655L did the check and £75 difference, straight on the phone using say no to 0870 wanting to know why I was 655 and not 647 as suggested by the checker.
Answer is I get a tax relief allowance for dry cleaning my uniform. Wish they would tell you all this without having to go hunting for the info
  • Soniboy, I think a quick call to the tax office will sort out your query. It could be a benefit in kind, or underpaid tax from a previous year. It wont be anything to do with the bonus.

I have a bit of an issue with this code checker as the only way to check your code is to see a notice of coding which details the additional allowances or income which has been included. And you only get a notice of coding from the tax office. All anyone can do is ask for a notice and then check it once its received and you can see whats on it.
  • Hi, just been checking my pay slip and my code is 603L CUMUL. does anyone know what this means??? thank you! :p

This is true - I would normally be on a tax code of 647L but I have a tax code of 654L. 647L gives me a personal allowance of £6475 and tax code 654L gives me a personal allowance of £6545 so difference is actually £70, not £65.

This means I actually pay less tax amounting to 20% of £70 so £14.

However I know my code is correct as I receive an allowance for professional subscriptions.

To be honest I really don't think it tells you anything useful.

    Im surprised at this

That is exactly what the checker tells you

It first tells you whether it matches

Then if not it gives you a list of reasons that may be the case

In your case you have 'employee benefits' which are on the list - so the checker does its job. Yet for someone in the same scenario who doesn't have employee benefits or something on the list it would indicate a problem.

We have built it as accurately as possible with the info. The aim is the tool to flag a problem.
