its northern gas works. I'll give them a call, guess if its essential work i dont have much choice, just the way its been handled is appauling, not to mention the inconvenience caused, if i went about my work in this way i would be sacked in second!
  • If there's a utility supply going through your garden then there probably is a legal right to be able to access/inspect it. When I bought my house before out current one I remember when going through the paper work with my Solicitor being informed that there was a shared drain that crossed our garden from the building on one side then though the next couple of gardens before it met up with the main drain in the road and that anyone "upstream" from me on the drain had a right to be able to access/inspect the drain in my garden and I had similar rights "downstream".

Having said there's a legal right then I'm not sure if this just allows them to walk in and dig up the garden - I suspect they are meant to ask (and if you refused could go and get a court order to enforce their rights).

I tried to call northern gas works but was queuing for ages... guess everyones trying to get them!

But i managed to get hold of the guys whos mobile number was on the letter, he came round this morning to have a chat. Nice bloke actually he works for enterprise and said northern gasworks should have wrote to warn us of the work, and he apologised on their behalf for not doing so. He ran through the work and the implications, seems my garden has the main junction for the street hence the large hole, they also have to gain access to the house but he's coming sat , on his day off apparently, as me and neighbours work most week days so they wouldnt be able to access.

Even though i'm still not impressed about loosing most of my garden his conduct so far has compensated a little!

    We'll see what happens next.
