At my wits end trying to connect PC to wireless network!

You should simply be connecting to your own wireless network. See if the following info here is helpful. You should connect in a similar way to your laptop downstairs.
Well I followed the steps given in that article, and I am now posting from the upstairs PC, connected to my home connection
