Took day off and returned to find member of staff taken away from me

there has obviously been a change and it doesn't sound like a good one for the op - I would also be concerned. It's not a decision that was only made on the day they had off therefore why were they not consulted about it which would be normal procedure. At least you have your appraisal tomorrow where you will find out more but I would be a bit concerned if I were you - sorry don't want to alarm you unnecessarily but I would definitely go in there as best prepared as you can be

To me it sounds like the management undermined your position within the company by doing this.

Have they done anything else to undermine your position?

I'd say it's not so much about the OP as about the person who had been reporting to them. If a company changed my line of reporting, then I'd expect to be told about it from my existing line manager, with a follow up confirmation from the new manager.
