Would renting make you bitter?

I wouldnt like renting, at least eventually when you pay off the mortgage, you have some money, renting you have to pay rent till you die.....
Not everyone who rents will do so until they die. You know there are people who are renting and waiting for prices to come down so they can save themselves a few pound.0 -
Not at all bitter.
We rent a lovely new house, and the LL couldn't be better. When we have a problem call the LL to tell him and then we get it fixed, and deduct the costs from the next rent.
LL never comes around and isn't interested in how we live or what we do, as long as he gets the rent on time. We have written permission to paint and decorate the house to our taste, with the condition that we cover holes and put it back into neutral colours (magnolia :mad:) when we move out.
Houseprices in NI are still falling, and renting enables us to save a bigger deposit. Our rent includes rates (council tax), and it would cost us almost 2.5 times the rent every month would we buy it right now (Mortgage, Rates, Insurance etc.).0 -

Problem is some of these people have been waiting for over 10 years. They could have paid off half the morgage during that time instead of renting. Hardly 'saving themselves a few pound' is it?0 -
My experience of renting:
1. Coudln't decorate, had !!!!!! white walls for over a year
2. Decoration was not nice, holes and screws left in walls, carpet cut wrongly so could see floorboard, cheap vinyl bathroom flooring cut so could see floorboard
3. Maintenance was sub-par, because landlord didnt live their and treated it like a business repairs were minimal and took a while to get done. Boiler was 20 years old, kitchen was 15 years old and greased up by previous tenants. Window frames were rotten (yes rotten).. single glazed and full of mould in interior and exterior. Had to use dehumidifer and mould spray to keep it in check.
4. Had to live beneath loud neighbours with a loud sub-woofer who thought putting washing on at midnight would be a good idea.
5. Moved 3 times in 2 years incuring moving costs and stress from moving out etc.
My experience of owning:
1. Own home, choice to change anything I want.. I understand my own home what its made of, how to fix it if it goes wrong.
2. Larger home, loft space, garden, garage, shed... but with downside of alot more maintenance tasks but i love it really
3. Dont have chavvy neighbours with dogs and loud sub-woofer tvs
4. Good estate, friendly neighbours feel welcome and happy to live there
5. Insurance costs £100 a year (with cashback), Council tax costs £200 more a year.. Other than that other costs are the same
6. Mortgage interest is the same as the rent I was paying. So for next 5 years feels same owning a 3 bed house compared to renting a 2 bed !!!! hole.
Only downside to owning a house?
Costs and time to decorate - The house and rooms we have changed look great, we feel much happier and at home but to make it this way it costs more.. Its not neccesarily something you wouldn't get with a rental i.e. if you landlord doesn't pay any money upkeeping property and you don't then its the same cost... but because its your home you want it to look great. New Boiler =£2300, New Sofas = £1000, Re-plastering and redecorating front room =£300 (did it ourselves), New Kitchen = £££££ (saving)
Basically owning seems to cost me more, but what I get from it.. makes me smile. a great place to live and enjoy life.. and after 15-20 years (am overpaying mortgage) it will be fully mine.. not somebody elses.. at that point I will start recouping the 'rent' someone who just 'rented' will be paying.. in essence help prepare me for retirement as i wont have a big outgoer as rent or mortgage.
Whoever thinks renting is better than owning is silly.. and probably not in a position to buy. I rented to save towards buying as buying and owning is something else.
But was I bitter while renting? Not really as i had my eyes on the goal and was determined to save 33% deposit, get a 5 year low rate mortgage (historically anyways :P) Now i can get on with my life, overpay a bit and be comfortable enough.0 -
Lots of this forum's regulars can only dream of what you have neas, that's why they come across so bitter and angry.0

Or maybe, they have invested the money and are in a much better position.
In terms of housing, why not make a profit on renting.0 -
If I wish to rent for social reasons (short time periods etc) then I would ahve no problem.
If I was forced to rent as the only way of having a home due to parasites buying up all the stock of houses for there own selfish needs, yes I would be bitter.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017
