High Latency?

Hi all

I left Orange broadband due to poor connection speeds such as download and upload, also I was getting high latency while playing an online game.
The 'standard' latency for England to the game server based in Chicago is approx 110ms - 130ms.
I left Orange and did a lot of research to find a new provider who could offer me better gaming latency with a more stable connection too. The ping (while in game) dropped from 140+ (Orange) down to 110-112ms and I was well happy even though paying double the monthly charge. Unfortunately my ping is now 200+ from approx 2pm - midnight. After a few calls and checks, my new IP say its a fault at my end due to the tracert results I sent them because the first hop is 99ms when it should be 1ms as its pinging to my router.

Any ideas where to start solving my problem as I don't want to ditch my internet provider for a problem thats not theirs!

I tried to post a link to my tracert results but am not able to because I'm new to the forum. Fair enough, no probs.

Paul.

If that is a Thomson/SpeedTouch router the 99ms is usually what it shows and it will have shown exactly the same when you were happy with it.

Try pinging BBC.co.uk then do a tracert to it - I'll bet the tracert shows that same 99ms but the ping will be much less - it is just an artefact of the Thomson firmware.

If the game in question was WoW you'll find complaints from many people - apparently they recently made some changes to their protocol resulting in shaping equipment reporting the traffic as unclassified which may result in high latency. This is likely to get fixed as many people will be complaining. Normally an individual complaining to ISPs about latency tends to be a waste of time - if you aren't happy with them then move again.
  • Firstly, thanks for your swift reply.

You are correct in saying the router is a Thomson/Speedtouch 585 v.7. The game I play and have been playing for nearly five years with the same friends from around the world is Battlefield 2 and the reason I play on a Chicago based server is because I work from 4:15pm - 2:45am so when I get home I play a few rounds with the Americans etc.

My PC connects via a LAN cable so I did the same tracert on my son's wireless PC from his bedroom and my older PC which is also wireless and connected to the main TV in the living room and both results showed the same figures.

Here's the results from my main (wired) PC to bbc.co.uk with my IP address 'starred' out.

So now I need to get back in touch with my provider who is Vivaciti, and explain to them what you have told me about the router's default figures?

    Thanks once again.

Called them again today and the support guy strongly denied your claim of "it is just an artefact of the Thomson firmware."

    Back to square 1.
  • Called Vivaciti again stating my thoughts of being capped at specific times. The tech guy got me to alter the DNS settings (hope thats right) and to be honest it didn't make any difference, probably made it worst if anything. So the next day I undid those settings and now my ping is very good at approx 112ms all day long !!!
Long may this continue but something inside is telling me this will not be the case.
  • Wow, My ping used to be around 50ms which I thought was rather high, but after switching to BT Infinity is now around 15ms. Is over 100ms not quite high still?
