I have seen some in wh smith. small plug in ones. Does anyone shred their home stuff and if so can you recommend a shredder?

I have a tiny shredder for home use, no bigger than a shoe box. It was given to me by a friend who decided he needed a bigger one after all.

It's a Ryman (yes, the stationers) Compact Shredder MS-100m Strip-cut. I don't know how much it costs, but it's brilliant. You can't put full A4 sheets in though - you will have to tear them in two. But it's ideal for shredding receipts, statements etc.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I think generally, its got to fit A4 size paper and to make certain ur stuff is shredded..best to get cross cut..if u get straight cut..(have u seen bad boys 2)

Excuse me if this suggestion is inappropriate; e.g. if you're dealing with stacks of paper, or you live in a flat with no garden, but have you considered doing what I do, and composting it?

I was wondering about that Barter, is all paper ok to be composted, ie heavily printed or coloured paper?

  • We bought a Fellowes shredder in Stationery Box -it cost about £30 (they can be bought in argos) its a cross cut a4 size machine that also does credit cards and staples -saves having to go through all your receipts to pick out the staples lol . We find it invaluable and shred pretty much anything for safety's sake!

thanks for the very quick replies everyone!!! To be honest Barter I have never thought of composting it. I do have a compost bin but as its at the bottom of the garden I doubt if i will do it in the winter. I could always put everything into a shoe box and do it once a week I suppose but its training everyone to do that!! But its given me thought. I was the victim of id theft when my handbag was stolen and it caused me a lot of personal worry for about 12 months as cheques and new accounts were being opened so i think i really do want to shred it. I could bring it to work as we have a huge shredder here but have decided that i even want to shred envelopes and things as I dont ever want to go through that again and thouht it would be easier if I have one in the kitchen so as soon as stuff is to be shredded I can put it straight in. I am not that worried about having it cross cut though as i suppose once its shredded I can then put it onto the compost! From the posts it seems that all the shredders seem to do a decent job so now i guess i have to decide what size I want and how much! thansk you again for your quick replies

I'm no expert, but the confidential stuff that we need to compost is usually ordinary paper, with just black type on, like credit card slips etc. (which I screw up to add air). However I suppose you need to make sure you add a mix of other varied matter to the pile for it to work, so a bit of heavily printed or coloured paper shouldn't be a problem but too much might be, & certainly would be in a solid block.

Just bought a cross shreader from Tesco yesterday, £14.97ish. Seems fine, takes up to 5 sheets but no staples!!

I was just looking at that on the site!! I think the one i will go for is the one WH smith have on offer at about 14.99 instead of £24.00. I will shred all my private letters etc inc envelopes then put that into a bin and mix it with my compost bin every week. If anyone then wants to rummage about in the bin with all the peelings and tea bags then they must be desperate!
  • Check out Woolies - we got a hand cross cut shredder for £7.99, which is compact and uses no electrcity, and is ideal for those who don't have reams of paper to shred!!

Much cheaper than the motorised ones!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!
