Again i would support the earlier recoimmendations for wordpress and as you want to do it for free The wordpress.com version is the one you should look at it is very versatile and should fully meet your needs.
If you download from wordpress.org you need to have it hosted somewhere for it to work unless of course you are doing that yourself also.0 -
https://www.moonfruit.com is great, I have used it to create several sites. there are varying levels of subscription but they do have a free one available to.0

www.orchardhosting.co.uk are 9.99 a year with free domain and hundreds of free one click installs
i use them for numerous business sites, hobby sites, and online shops
the owner tom is great with tech advice and very quick at answering, theres a forums with lots of help too0 -
I use a product called SiteSpinner to create my site which is very easy to use for a non techie. You import your pics into Picture Objects and your text into Text objects and then move them around the page however you like to create your own layout. No need to know anything about html etc, (although you can set up code objects if you need to.) It costs around $49 but they often have discounted offers and it is well worth it. You can pay with Paypal.
Apart from anything else, the online support is EXCELLENT, costs nothing and they get back to you with 24 hours. There are lots of extra facilities and a more sophisticated version called SiteSpinnerPro if you are more technically minded. You can upload your site onto a preregistered URL - are not tied to SS. I have a site at www.myportsaid.info if you want to see what can be done by a complete non specialist.
I have nothing at all to do with the product apart from being a happy user who alighted on it after trying, and rejecting, all the free software offered by isps as unsatisfactory and Dreamweaver as too difficult.0 -

You're having a laugh.
Dont let this put any one off, its not that dificult and if you just want a simple website (or not so simple) you never need to learn programming languages.
One of the easiest ways it to sign up with free webhosting and install getsimple cms or you can use a web builder that the hosting co usually provide foc.
Its all free. and if you find a good host you'll have good up time (goggle).0 -

As per title. I want to build my own website, nothing fancy about 3-5 pages and I'd like total control and somewhere where I can edit the text and up load photos.
Is there any free software out there I can use that does a half decent job?
Have looked at WordPress but having trouble downloading it this evening
If it for personal use then go to www.wordpress.com. They host it for you too.
If it's for business use then use a professional.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
I use https://www.unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk and pay about £3 a month and this includes a .com domain if you want. Have never had any problems with them and support are very fast to answer any questions. They state they will answer within 8 hours but i have never waited more than 10 minutes for an answer to any problemsSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

Whilst I second the Wordpress option as this is free, you only get what you pay for - which is nowt!
one "con" I found with free sites, is the amount of adverts etc they pust on them, and with most, you need to use your own "hotmail.com, or yahoo.co.uk email account"
A simple .co.uk domain/email is pennies per year (£3.00) and if you know how to use Ms Word, then Dreamweaver is a kinda advanced Ms Word with added extras
https://www.gentlehands.co.uk was done using DW, and although not finished - theres a gallery to on this week, it serves the purpose for which is was designed. To act as a promotional/marketing tool for our business.
The site is hosted on 1and1, and in the past 4 years Ive not had 1 issue with them (and I've bought and cancel at least 2 domain names in this time!)
If you want something flash (literally!), then your going to have to pay for it.0 -
I used to use weebly.com and could make a semi decent site for absolutely free.
I learnt programming languages and made this: www.icreativesolutions.co.uk. Its in flash and took around 4 days to code.
I would advise any business owner to get a professional web presence and a business email and landline number.
For a new start up testing the market weebly.com is adequate. You can set up a site in 30mins live! You also have the ability to add page titles, keywords, meta tags, google webmasters features, blog, contact form, videos, shopping cart and paypal integration. I cant think of a basic feature it doesnt have.
All for free - plus no 3rd party adverts.0
