Parents struggling

My mam has had arthritis for the past 10 years she is now 62 and retired my dad is also 62 and in full time work. My dad wants to retire to look aftre my mam has shes getting worse and worse lately. He has a private company pension but that will only pay him £80 a week and he carnt afford to live on that. Is there any benfits he would be entitled to to help them out. They live in a council house at £100 a week with rent and council tax.

have they tried for Pension Credit

does she get DLA Care either at the Middle or high rate, then your dad may qualify for carers allowance

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/CarersAllowance/index.htm

these should give you a start

there is no upper limit on pension credit, the tarriff income is £1 for every £500 above £10k, he won't get in now with him working full time but once he is finished you may find that he could be entitled. the government says a couple has to have at least £202.42 per week to live on, yes the pension would be taken into account and tarriff income any kind of other income but you may be surprised and if your mum got DLA care at middle or high rate and then your father got carers allowance a premuium could be added to that amount and potentiall could be extra money for them. as they should get the guranteed element that passports them to council and housing benefit. as they say don't knock it till you have tried it!

    no. it is not,

    Guarantee Credit

If you are living in Great Britain and have reached the minimum qualifying age, you may be entitled to the Guarantee Credit. This guarantees a minimum income by topping up your weekly income to:

    • £132.60 if you are single
    • £202.40 if you have a partner
I do PC2s and see these figures day in and day out. there is a highter amount if savings credit is considered
