Thanks for enlightening me on the subject!
I would dearly love to adopt a rescue Weim in the future when Martha is older and has enjoyed her puppyhood. They are a fantastic breed and I would love to give a needy girl a good, loving home.My circumstances would have to change first, she has been at work with me all day today and was brilliant, but I have 2 teenagers who muck in with the walking and care.
Bulchy-your Weim boy is a beaut, looks very happy and brill in his shirt!
I do think that people take the responsibility of a dog too lightly, they are hard word (but very rewarding)
Georgina-thanks for that info-I was going to talk to the vet about having the dew claws removed at the same time,as they keep catching on things.I know I will cry when I take her for her op so I may get the O/H to drop her off, otherwise I will make an idiot of myself blubbing!
On a moneysaving slant(just in case us dog lovers lose this thread)-does anyone use Costco dog food as I heard it is good stuff at a good price?
Another money saving tip is that eBay do great collars at good prices.
Also, which pet insurance does everyone use and what do you think??

I use M&S because they have high limits on claims. I've never had to claim but 1 of my dogs may have an hereditary back problem which could result in £5,000 worth of surgery. M&S were the only insurers at the time that would give enough cover for this eventuality.

I don't use Costco dog food, but I buy my Autarky there for my Springer -she does very well on it.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I use M&S insurance for my pets. So far this year I've made 2 claims for my big fella, claiming over £1,500, and they have paid up no probs. Not looking forward to renewing the policy next year. Given Thunders health and how accident prone hes proving to be, I wonder if this is why his previous owners have given him up, but there loss is my gain, as he is a wonderful dog, a credit to the breed. Fabianne thanks for the compliments on him, hes a handsome chap isnt he??? Your girl is very pretty too, she looks like a mischevious girl, there something else arent they??

Will have a look at M and S thanks-had a quote from Petplan to compare it with.
Cool name for a cool dawg, bulchy.
Thanks for the compliments also, that pic was taken the day she joined the family and is one of my fav's-she is huge now.I think they tend to be accident prone as they are so eager, damn nosey all the time and those long, long legs and big paws make them clumsy-yet they are so graceful when they run ..

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I was sort of expecting that some people would accuse me of being irresponsible, so for the record:
    1. I have had dogs all my life - mostly rescued mongrels - all of them have been spayed/neutered and I would completely agree that there are far too many dogs that need a loving home already. In fact, I brought a stray back from Greece 8 years ago (happily living with my parents by the way!) BUT
    2. She is my OH's dog, in the sense that he wanted to get her, he paid for her and she spends everyday at work with him (she is my baby though - always my lap she chooses to cuddle up on!). So if he wants her to have puppies, I won't try and stop him. What I will do is gather all the relevant information and perhaps he might come around to thinking it's not such a great idea. Personally I would have had her spayed ages ago.
    3. Loads of people we know would like one of her puppies, but if we couldn't find homes for them we would keep them
    4. We are not in it to make money. We would spend whatever we had to, to ensure both she and her pups were healthy and happy. I just wanted an idea of what other people had to spend.
    5.

I'd also add that anyone wanting to breed their dog should be well aware of the breed standard required, but you are making a conscious decision to produce crossbreeds/mongrels, which surprises and shocks me.
I don’t care about breed standards and neither does anyone who would like one of her pups. She is absolutely gorgeous and she is a pet, not a show dog. Patterdales aren’t really a pedigree anyway, as they all look so different. Ours is border coloured with a white paw, whereas both her parents were black. Also, Patterdales were originally bred from Lakelands, so they’re not that far removed from each other.
    6. I would be very, very careful about who we let have a puppy. I know what sort of people and environment a dog needs.
    7. I will definitely tell OH she is far too young at the moment and I will get confirmation from the vet.

I think that's all I can say for now! She is insured with PetPals by the way

So many people let their dogs have pups just because they have always wanted to, it's not fair on the poor dog to force her to have pups, and thats what you are doing, your going to force a male dog onto her, thats not fair.

So many pups are dumped or drowned in ponds because they are a burden. Please don't breed her unless you have researched about it first.

I do fear that some people out there do not think about these things first, they want their dog to have pups, but once they are here, they don't want the mess or costs that comes with it.

I'm not saying your one of these, but i'd chat to your vet about the pros and cons first.
