  • i have to admit to taking my R plates down 2 months early. I was working in Larne for a while and driving from Lisburn to Larne at 45 mph was taking literally HOURS! LOL

  • Are the R plates the same for motorbikes all I can find are ones that stick to a car windscreen.

drove wife's car with an R plate on and went over 45 and got a penality letter. Is there any point in disputing ?

PS : my licence is over 5 years and doesn't require an r plate.

No point at all - you should have removed them while you were driving.

I'm afraid it's the law, nothing you can do about it I reckon, sorry.

  • Going on the motorway is grand if you go on a less busy time, it can get frustrating watching a lot of cars come flying up behind you then over taking knowing that you cant go any faster.

I had a pretty angry lorry driver flash toot and sit right up the back of me for sticking to the 45mph speed limit with very visable R plates on at one time i thought he was about to go into the back of me as he was so close.

I remember years ago more than once watching people trying to put up their R plates in the queue for a police spot check* as I sat in an green millitary vehicle behind them.
I never stuck them in as it wasn't a security issue IMO.

My dad got caught doing just under 70mph on the motorway many years ago. Problem was my R plates were on the car. Plod was a tad annoyed but let him off with a warning to remove them in future. You could try and contest it and plead ignorance but I doubt you'll get anywhere. Face to face at the time and with a polite tone of voice and lots of apologies you may have just gotten a ticking off but if it's come through the post I'd say you're out of luck.
