If you're an O2 mobile user, their new package (scroll down in the above article) looks pretty good value abeit there is a drawback in that O2 could bar access to 18185 if they wanted to do so (although they don't at the moment apparently).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Many thanks Heinz... it really is a minefield out there isn't it?

No LLU services are available on the Pontybodkin exchange (crazy name, crazy place!), so you are looking at one of the non-LLU suppliers for broadband services. I'd have a look at Plusnet to start with. You won't get the cheapest rates without being LLU I'm afraid. Rather depends what you are paying at present-you didn't say.

  • O2's basic line rental (no calls) is only £7.50 a month now too, the article needs updating.

02 Home Phone will not really be relevant to the OP, as it is not a standalone product. And they do not want the dreadful 02 Access broadband, which is all that is available on that exchange.

  • Just got a letter from O2 as I am a mobile customer. The deal sounded very good: first three months free, line rental at £7.50 and £8 a month the basics broadband for a 12 months contract. That would be a huge saving compare to Talk Talk, the one I am with now. So I rang O2 up just to find out that for whatever reason they could not swap the line and I would have to pay £85.00 for the instalation of a new line!:eek::eek:

You've just discovered the downside of your cheap but not very cheerful current provider. If your line is already LLU'd, then you can't switch your line rental direct to 02, you'll have to go back to BT line rental for 12m on a 'return to donor', which is free. Once your line is back on BT, you can then apply for 02 broadband. After 12m, you could then switch calls and line rental to 02.

  • Thank you Macman. I did consider doing what you said, switching to BT line then get O2 broadband. Then I rang Talk Talk to get my Mac code and had a really good offer! The deal is: 18 months contract at £18.48 and first 6 months at half price for the line rental and broadband with all the other benefits like: free evening and weekend cals, free router, free 0845/0870 calls. What comes to a total of £110.88 over 12 months. Just for the BT line rental alone I would pay £119.88 over the same period! Well done to Talk Talk

If you're going to take the offer, GET IT IN WRITING.

I did take the offer over the phone and they gave me a Ref. number. Assuming all calls are recorded and monitored I don't see the point on getting that in writting. I am with them for over 3 years (started with Tiscali) and they always honoured every word they said to me over the phone. When I had some problems with line and broadband disconnection they refunded the money for the days I had been withouth service and gave me 3 months free broadband and line rental for the problem I had experienced. All that was offered over the phone without writting confirmation and I was really pleased with the outcome. I know a lot of people experience problems with their customer services, but I can't say the same. I am confidente that if any mistake happens, I can call then and they will sort out the problem on the best way.
