Hotels In New York

  • In the spirit of this website 'all things moneysaving' I wish to throw my hat into the ring.

Have you thought about the hostels out there. They are no longer prefixed 'youth' hostels, so the more mature traveller can feel comfortable staying there.

I stayed at the Chelsea international Hostel in, yup, you guessed it, Chelsea. The area has the lowest crime rate in New York and it is literally a 15 min walk from the Empire State building. It is really central.

They have private (double) rooms $70 per night inc taxes.

I was very impressed, it was cheap and essentially clean. It had a really good atmosphere about it and the staff wre fantastically helpful to the newbie of New York.

By the way, I was in my thirties when I stayed there. There is sooo much to do in NY, the only time you are in your room is when your eyes are closed.

Take some ear plugs, the sirens go on all night!

We just had a rather wonderful hol staying at The Hudson Hotel in Manhattan. It is usually quite expensive, and lots of hidden extras such as 15$ bottles of water, but I gather you can sometimes get deals on Expedia.com for 300$ including flight which sounds good to me. Take your own water! I know they were doing a rate of 300 $ for a queen sized room plus b and b when we stayed. Due to a misunderstanding we ended up taking a larger room for $ 475 but that was a good thing as then we got upgraded to a massive room which was nice. Can recommend asking for the 14th floor - it has nice views and is quiet. Check out the brilliant sky terrace on the 15th floors.

also we just stayed at the Dekoven Suites in Brooklyn. Slightly eccentric place but $135 per night for a suite can't be bad! You get the underground in to Manhattan - takes about 20 minutes or so. Stop is right next to house (you can hear the trains go by!). The landlady was lovely and left out Disney videos and toys for my son, plus breakfast was sumptuous with warm croissants and fruit etc. That part of Brooklyn is very nice - Dekoven is a tree lined street. Classic suburban stuff.

  • GF and I are staying in NYC for 2 nights on October 30th. We wanted something basic to just crash in while we explore before our connecting flight to Toronto from Newark on the Wednesday.

We've got deluxe rooms at the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York for £60 a night.

It's a juicy spot as it's literally across the road from Penn Station, it's no hassle to get to Newark from and is about 3 blocks from the Empire State and next door to Macys. :D
  • I've made a shortlist of two and rooms are restricted at both of them, so I'll say which two when my reservation is confrimed!

been put off so many by reviews on trip advisor... inc Pennsylvania (sorry) due to report of dirty rooms and bed bugs etc.

No excuse for this sort of thing and the last thing we want is for the 7-8 hours a day we do spend in the room being a misery and spoiling the stopover!

I'd look for something in the Greenwich Village area. Stay downtown, under 23rd street.
Only when the last tree has died
and the last river has been poisoned
and the last fish has been caught
will we realise we cannot eat money

Where did you get such a cheap rate from? Did you book directly from the Hotel website?
  • Sorry, forgot to mention my GF works for an airline and i'm on her's and another person's 'buddy lists' so we got staff bookings. :)

Congrats on the good deal but I would have gone for a different hotel if Tripadvisor.com is anything to go by .

  • True, the reviews look scary, but I think a lot of people scaremonger on that site. We've stayed at places listed on there as "should be condemned" etc etc and they've been absolutely great.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day and here's a little tip for those looking for places in New York that we were told about from folk working for this particular airline.

Most of the rooms in the city are all fairly basic, they just vary in price based on location and reputation. People have been known to pay a lot of money for a posh hotel and had something resembling a 2 star.

A few of the staff had stayed at Pennsylvania Hotel and all said it's basic enough but it's just a room and it is clean. The Tripadvisor reviews are a bit OTT I think and it's just a place to crash after all.

If the room turns out to be grotty we'll complain and demand to be moved to a better room. :)
