Saxon Multi Fuel Stoves Help

Hi All,

Has anyone any thoughts/comments/reviews on Saxon Multifuel stoves. You can only buy them from Saxon Fires in North Wales as they're their own range. They're Chinese cast iron stoves, have seen one in operation and seems good but unsure about the airwash system, product longetivity etc.... am looking into getting the Flame 8.
Any feedback would be brilliant.

Look around a bit more. The Chinese stoves do not have a good reputation, for a couple of hundred pounds more you could have a really decent British stove.

If you go back and read earlier pages on this forum, you'll find a lot of reasons to be very cautious indeed about Chinese stoves. Apparently, some have improved, but many have not.

There are few advantages to cast iron as opposed to steel (though some dodgy retailers will try to tell you otherwise) and a lot of reasons why a British-made steel stove would be a better bet.

This is a booming fashion market and a lot of retailers are piling-in, buying any old stove they can pick up for a few pounds from China or elsewhere, and cashing-in on the hopes of gullible customers buying a dream.
  • Have seen many cheap chinese stoves over thelast few months. The reason im interested in this one is that it a) weights an absolute tonne (heavier than most UK stoves) b) Its cast iron mouldings seem very well made c) Its Saxons Fires (who have been around for 30 odd years) own make and model which just happens to be made in China. What im trying to find is someone who owns one and can give honest objective feedback.

I'm not having a go at people who buy Chinese stuff but.....

Stoves are one of the few things we still make in this country, and make well!

Now, if we dont start standing up for what is left of our own native industry by buying stuff from them, then pretty soon we wont have industry left at all.

Sure, you may have saved a few quid, but what good is a few quid that when no-one has a job and our welfare cheques are replaced by shoeshine kits and instructions in how to say "please" and "thank you" in Chinese.

Cast iron hasnt any significant pluses over steel. In fact OH is always moaning about cast iron stoves turning up on site with cracks already in them. Dont go by weight :) Go by quality.

I have to agree with hethmar (for once!) cast iron offers no real advantages, is far harder to keep airtight and its weight means nothing either way. Saxon may (or many not) be any good, but make sure you are comparing the right things when choosing a stove, not irrelevances.

You might have a look at www.whatstove.co.uk to see if there are an user reviews. That can be a help.

They look like the Firefox range of stoves, with a few detail changes?
