Hi, I have just downloaded firefox for the umpteenth time,I keep removing it, seldomuse it.However, it told me my search engine (default)is avg , my AV, do I want to carry on using it or change to another.I had no idea avg was my earch engine, I may hay inadvertently made it so when upgrading my av to 2011avg.I thought it was IEor AOL, as they are the 2 browsers I use most.is there any difference in them ?or are they all pretty much the same?would I be better changing ?any advice would be grateful.cheers

AVG is an Anti-Virus program. It is generally considered to be effective and this is borne out in independent tests. So not remove it.
Ignore what Firefox says.
This is all rather curious as the default search engine built into Firefox is Google.

You've inadvertantly installed the AVG toolbar by failing to deselect that option when upgrading. Just remove it or reinstall (but preferably remove AVG completely, which is no longer a reliable AV program IMHO).No free lunch, and no free laptop

Don't you hate it when software writers add free toolbars etc other bloatware. Plus one for not trusting AVG to do a good job, must say that each AV tend to go up and down the "best list" faster than yo-yos4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . It's not the software writers. AVG gets paid by the search providers for adding it in, just the same as Dell gets paid by Microsoft for putting a 30 days Office trial etc. on it's new products. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi, Thanks for replies.I have had AVG for ages, tried others and very happy withe avg, as you say, probably downloaded toolbar, but does this make it my default search engine?I couldn,t understand firefox either, Ihave put on and off at whim, how does one know which is the default engine?I thought once you changed to use a different browser, it used its seach engine, obviously not. When I use IE, its Yahoo.and thats what I use, on aol I,m not sure.Is browser and engine the same? You've inadvertantly installed the AVG toolbar by failing to deselect that option when upgrading. The search box at the top of the browser has a down arrow on it that allows you to manage search providers.

Hi, Tried the arrow on IE home page which is yahoo. All it did is refresh it.I have all toolbars, avg, google, yahoo,on homepage, never ever used avg to my knowledge.google, yes.on aol homepage, which I use frequently, my ISP, no idea what engine it is, presumed it was aol.s own:doesn,t say.debitcardmayhem wrote: »The search box at the top of the browser has a down arrow on it that allows you to manage search providers.

probably need to get rid of crap.you need eyes like a hawk whenever updates come up.boxes hidden everywhere.in add/remove, there,s no uninstal avg toolbar, only, avg 2011, so it must be combined'I have done a hijack this report for alienEriK, on another post, ccleaner, so I,ll see what he comes back to me with, unless I post it separate??0 -
Just uninstall all the surplus toolbars. With that many you have hardly any screen space left!No free lunch, and no free laptop
