Free Voicemail

If you're on PAYG like me, you probably have to pay in order to access any voicemail. I've found a free alternative that probably is more convenient to use. Instructions as follows:

1. Go to https://www.voipuser.org, and click on new User sign-up
2. Once your registration and activation are done, click on My Numbers, and sign up for a new 0844 or other number..
3. Edit the number such that for each of the periods (days, evenings and weekends) it goes to a non-existent destination (I use a phone number that I no longer use), and ensure that the voicemail option is checked.

4. When you first received your phone, it was probably set up to divert to the telco's voicemail number when busy, off or out of coverage. Cancel all your active diverts on your phone. This varies from model to model, but new generation Nokias have their divert settings under Settings -> Call Settings -> Call Divert.
5. Change your voicemail number to the 0844 number you requested. Then reactivate diverts to your voicemail number when busy, off, not answered and out of coverage (more if you wish)

Whenever you're unable to receive a call, the caller will then be redirected to the 0844 number, who will then record his voicemail. This will be saved as an audio file sent to the e-mail address that you used to register an account with VoIPUser.

It may be entirely possible that steps 4 and 5 are unnecessary, ie, it's possible to change the voicemail number without having to deactivate and reactivate the diverts. Can somebody please clarify on this?

Anyway, hope this helps you....

Which network are you on that lets you divert without taking from your credit? Some networks don't even let you set your own diverts on payg.
  • ah. Sorry. tis my bad. I get charged by easyMobile. Thanks for pointing it out...
  • Easy Mobile are the only payg network that allow you to divert your call to another number, other then a voicemail.

    Virgin payg offer free voicemail.
