i don't think there is any rules. i always remember the rule about the ring is meant to cost i months wages.

i not keen on solitares either, so my engagment is a huge cluster of 19 diamond's. it stunning i'd never seen anything like it. we have been married now over 8 years and i still don't have an eternity ring. not through hubby not offering, but i've jsut never found the right one. having said that if hubby went and bought one as a surprise then i would love it no matter what as it came form him.

It doesn't matter - go with what you like.

One thing to bear in mind is that wearing two rings together on the one finger, the metals should be of equal hardness otherwise the harder one will eventually wear the softer one away. And if you can find a jeweller to make you the ring, you'll probably pay a lot less than high street jewellers 'off the shelf' stuff.

It absolutely doesn't matter! Go with whats right for you, I knew I wouldn't have a traditional single set solitaire as I felt it too common/usual and wanted something that bit different but still with diamonds.

This is my engagement ring http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/product/brides-18ct-gold-020ct-diamond-wedding-ring-06500561 which was paid for with Tesco vouchers :money::D

Go with whatever you fall in love with not whats traditional :D

I wouldn't of thought there were specific rules.
I'd prefer (when he eventually asks me ;)) to have a ring from maybe an antique shop, or one that's hand made... or even better that we could help make... one that's unique.
  • I agree with others, if you prefer that ring then go for it :D

My engagement ring is a cluster ring that cost £30 and I love it. I'm not sure if I would want my OH to spend loads on a ring lol. My BF has an engagement ring that cost £3,000 :eek:it's platinum and diamond but she never wears it incase she loses it which is quite sad tbh
  • Wear what every you please, Mines an eternity ring , never had any comments about it either and funny enough I think it better than a traditional ring as sentementally its The past you have together, how your present now and the future you will have together, Have fun choosing it

I'd go for a symbolic engagement ring for the moment and then go shopping together as that's really fun. My husband said he would never in a month of sundays picked the engagement ring I chose.
He proposed with a beaded one that was on my birthday card as he hadn't really planned the moment but I loved going to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham and seeing lots of happy couples and buying it together.
My diamond solitaire and wedding band are both white gold (rhodium plated) but in 4 years of engagement and 3 years wed I've never replated them...I wear everyday don't take off for putting lotions or moisturisers and they look fab.
For being a traditionalist...I'm looking forward to an eternity ring on the birth of our first child...which hopefully is May next year.

Hope your fiance loves what you choose and at the end of the day, the words and the moment will be what she remembers. :)

Mine are White gold, had 1 over 6 yrs never needed replating yet.

Whatever u choose, try and pick same metals for both rings, otherwise they will rub and the stronger metal may rub the softer metal, Ie: platinum rubs White gold so u then need it rhodium plated again...

Have fun choosing, and good luck. Xxx

I was given an enternity ring for my birthday last year. (He didn't want to marry back then)

OH has now decided that he does want to marry me, and i thought about the costs of an engagement ring, and realised that why do i need an engagement ring, i don't want to have 3 rings on my wedding finger, and i don't want him spending money on another ring, when i feel i don't need it.

So he whipped off the ring the other week, got on his knees and officially proposed and slipped it back on. I'm happier with this, i don't need lots of rings. I don't want him spending money on engagement rings because it's the done thing, waste of money.
