My son's nursery teacher thinks....

Being neither teacher or mother here my opinion isn't worth an awful lot, but I thought I'd stick my 2p in.
I am amazed that she can tell a thyroid problem by the way he gets up....hands up all those that took years to get diagnosed. Don't you all wish you sat on the floor and got up funny??? Wonder if/how she'd diagnose a pancreatic problem? Sit down funny? Ohh must be diabetic then. :rotfl:
And as for denying him chocolate...dispicable, for many many reasons...the first being the little tike is only 3 for crying out loud. But, shes singling him out for being different...the other kids will notice...and before we know it, poor thing is being bullied:mad: . (And may start comfort eating, and bingo!)

Hope no-one minds me throwing in a word of caution here. None of us apart from the OP was there. We all agree that the thyroid comment was very strange to say the least but none of us know the way the conversation went.
It all may be black and white and the teacher is indeed a complete ninny, but it also may be that there was some misunderstanding or meaning that was picked up wrongly? It wouldn't be the first time that two people have completely different ideas about what was said in the same conversation.
I just feel a little uneasy about how everyone has accepted without question that the teacher has diagnosed a thyroid problem by the way the child gets up and is so quick to slate her. I wonder if the conversation was quite as clear cut at that?
Sorry OP, I hope you're not offended by my thoughts. I do think the situation is so off the wall that I wonder if there is more to it, or some sort of misunderstanding. None of which any of us will know as we weren't there.
I hope Thursday (today/next Thursday?) has a good outcome and your mind is put at rest. At least if that's the case you can return to the teacher with fact and the knowledge that you can pretty much safely ignore her 'advice' in future.
(Btw nothing wrong with Bingo, you can win huge amounts of money these days. Maybe we should start an MSE team and go to Bingo wearing MSE t-Shirts.

totally OT but you know what I'm always so annoyed when I think about things like this. As I've already said I have a weight problem myself, to look at me you would think I sit eating from the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed that I do no exercise at all and would be just like the "Fat family" you describe. But honestly I'm not. I watch diet programs on tv (like you are what you eat etc) and my diet is no where near as bad as the people on those shows yet I am bigger than a lot of them. I walk about 4 miles a day, (ds'school is a mile away so there and back twice, and it's not flat round here either!) don't have a car so walk much much more than a lot of people. It's not b!oody fair :mad:Poppy9 wrote:Then there is the otherside. I was in the Cinema recently and the Fat family were in.
2 parents fat, 2 boys fat. Their cinema eats consisted of a large bucket of popcorn each (yes that's 4 buckets), a few bags of maltesers, starburst etc and a large coke each. They had so much food each that they had spare seats in between them to pile it up on.
There is just no justice in the world :rotfl: ok rant over0 -

Love the rant - it feels so good doesn't it.
Just to pick you up on a point though - I and hopefully most others wouldn't describe you as the fat family as it doesn't sound as if you sit in the Cinema eating a bucket of popcorn each. Normally I don't care what people do if it doesn't impact on me but I just felt these parents weren't being fair on their two boys, who were clearly very overweight, by encouraging such gluttony.

I do have 4 year old twin boys with a thyroid problem. I'm not giving any medical advice - just my personal experiences. They didn't have it at birth - their heel !!!!! test thing was fine. However, it was spotted on a regular visit to the gp just by the way one of my boys had a largish tongue that stuck out. My boys are not overweight or have any of the usual symptons of thyroid problems (their thyroids are underactive). It is very unusual in boys especially young ones but it is possible and a simple blood test should be able to detect it. If they are not regularly monitored and given medication they would stop growing taller and it can affect brain development in younger children too - although my boys were still babies it was caught in time we think. It does seem an unusual thing for a teacher to suggest but personally I am thankful that someone pointed out to me that one of my boys didn't look 'quite right' although I was shocked and upset at first.
Have you managed to get a doctors appointment just to reassure yourself that everything is fine with your son? It is definitely worth the peace of mind.0 -

Hi there,
I couldn't get an appointment on thursday, with our gp you have to ring on the day and despite ringing just after nine all the appointments were taken. I'm going to ring today and make an appointment for monday regardless.
Ds is fine, took him for a long walk yesterday and tired him out, it's raining today so I'll stick his wellies on and take him for a splash. I think I should clarify that ds's tummy is not huge or anything, I mean it does stick out a bit but always has. I wish I knew how to post personal pictures from my computer and I could show you all some pics but I'm not that savvy!!cpu wrote:I just feel a little uneasy about how everyone has accepted without question that the teacher has diagnosed a thyroid problem by the way the child gets up and is so quick to slate her. I'm not offended and it was an odd converstion but the teacher seemed very definate and I did think I could have misunderstood but I've gone over and over it and can't think of a way I could have mistaken it. I understand the teacher's concern and realise it's part of her job to look out for things like this but it was fairly tactless and unduly worrying.
Thanks for everyone's input and opinions, I'll let you all know what the gp/hv says on monday.

Good luck, but you yourself will know if your son is overweight or not. Some west indian friends say a child sticking its bum in the air is a sign that another child is on the way.
Please don't let the teacher's comments eat away at you. No one on this earth is worth the flattery of occupying your mind with their negativity. Get what you can out of this experience to make you and your son strong.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
