Remove AVG?

Whilst helping a friend install some protection on her machine I tried to remove AVG.
She had been using the paid for version but as the licence had now expired I suggested she swap to all free programmes.
PC Tools has gone on fine as has Malwarebytes, Ccleaner and Superantispyware. These last 3 have run and cleared out some stuff.
It's just a new anti virus seeming to be a problem. I was going to put MSE on as I have been using it for quite a while myself and had no probs (touch wood) but it froze my friends machine,. I have tried several times, using the removal tool to get rid of AVG in case it is clashing but nothing seems to be getting rid of it!
Have now put on Avast which has at least installed fine and seems to be doing its thing but anyone any thoughts about the AVG situation please?
Many thanks.

  • Just use the Free Version of AVG.

From memory, if the paid for version of AVG expires then it automatically reverts to the free version in any case.

So why create more work for yourself ? !

  • Thanks for that but the free version does not get rated anything like as highly as some other options so have in fact now put everything else on , just need to know how to get rid of AVG.
    Thanks anyway.:o

I seem to recall that I also had problems removing AVG when I wanted to change to MSE.

Try putting your machine into Safe Mode - I tap F8 repeatedly on my machine immediately after powering up to bring up Advanced Boot Options (your machine might be same or different key) - and then use the AVG removal tool.

Once its removed just power off and re-start normally.

    Hope this helps !!

Thanks for this. :T Will give it a go when I am next in front of her computer!
Is the link for the removal tool.
But you should first uninstall AVG from the control panel, then use the removal tool.

Also malwarebytes with avast should be fine, so remove superantispyware.

ccleaner is pretty good for removing stuff too. You can download here http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner - gets rid of loads of rubbish left behind when you uninstall anything.
  • The Grandmaster: I did in fact use the AVG removal tool following add/remove programs but AVG is still present.
adecor: Have run CCleaner anyway but makes no difference to AVG.
    any other thoughts welcome.:o

    what are the symptoms?

post hijackthis log. if uninstaller/removal tools don't do it, remove entries from registry/startup, and delete the relevant folders, or reinstall, then uninstall.

superantispyware and pctools will slow it down.

avast is the best free option imo, better than mse in terms of resources, and detection

    Id uninstall AVAST
Install AVG over the top of whatevers still running
use REVO UNINSTALLER to remove all of AVG it can
    Run CCLEANER (normal and registry)
    Run AVG REMOVAL TOOL
    Reinstall AVAST
(All the above is assuming its free of nasties, Run MALWAREBYTES first to make sure)
