  • +1 to the suggestion that you should go to a makeup counter. I went to the Mac counter which cost £25 for an hour and you then get the £25 to spend on products. I went for a new makeup look for my wedding but you could get whatever kind of look you wanted done, be it light daytime makeup, clubbing makeup or whatever. I think if you paid more (maybe about £40) then you got an hour and a half with the makeup artist where they will do your makeup then take it off then you get to apply the makeup yourself, with your makeup artist helping you. There was a girl getting this done next to me and was having a whale of a time!

If you are willing to go to a make-up counter, try Bobbi Brown. I dont think they make an unflattering colour! I use one of their kits, with blusher, eyeshadow and lip colour. They are not cheap, however I use this every day, its the first compact that I'm in danger of wearing out all the colours, not just one.

They also have lots of helpful tips on the website as well.

Good luck, and have fun, remember it washes off!

I'm the same, I don't really like make up. Recently if I see a woman with a face full of makeup I feel like running up to her with a wet cloth and rubbing it all over her face :D

  • i personally use clinique almost make up..... its a tinted moisturiser and is really good and gives a little coverage, and belands very very easily. also a little mascara and i personally use dior lipbalm as it highlights your own lip colour rather than giving your lips colour so to speak and it is a balm rather than a sticky lip gloss...... I also use a bit of blonde bronzer from L'oreal too ... beatuy flash balm by clarins is also a favorite of mine.....

just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the advice in this thread.

I dipped my toe into the world of make up for a staff do this week - couldn't believe the difference some eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss made to enhance what I 'already have' (don't like the heavily made up look at all).

    anyone got any more tips?

I was in the same position as OP a few months back...I'm nearly 47 but rarely wear make up and get married in 3 months. I checked out some of the Youtube stuff and in the end bit the bullet and headed for the Bobbi Brown counter. They do a free makeover and the lady was really nice, understood I didn't want to look heavily made up and took time going over different options. There was no hard sell either, though I did buy one of their rouge pots - not cheap but is gorgeous and seems to just go on for ever. Looks so much better than my powder blushers ever do so worth every penny. I just try to experiment a little and am getting used to it - though must admit still a bit scared of getting panda eyed!
I've also got properly into a cleansing routine at night so my skin is doing well too

I'm not a big fan of makeup but started to wear it for work. I find mineral makeup very easy to wear. I use Bare Minerals brand.

It's not particularly cheap but a little goes a very long way and it's very quick to put on. I don't even notice I'm wearing it and it doesn't run or need touching up.

I bought a box set with free brushes for just under £50

plus I also bought a mascara. The sales woman on the counter did me a little makeover, plus gave me a free lipstick and two free samples of eye shadow, so I'm sorted.

For much cheaper makeup, I've found the Avon Colours range very good for lipstick, eyeshadow etc. I've yet to find a foundation I've liked other than the Bare Minerals one tough.

Avon sales and clearance catalogues tend to be very good value, by the way.

Another thing, not cheap, but when I can afford it, I get my eyelashes tinted. It saves so much time, and mascara tends to irritate my eyes/rub off. Tinting lasts about 2 months tops, and costs around £15.

re the tinting of eyelashes - this doesnt make them look longer or thicker, just darker? Was wondering if worth it for me I have black eyelashes but they are not as thick or long as they were. I have my eyebrows tinted when they are shaped that costs about £15 altoghether
Has anyone ever tried Revitalash or the similar products that are suposed to make eyelashes grow? they are supposed to work from what I have heard.
