Please help a beginner to make up!

Options
Morning ladies,

I've decided enough is enough and I'm out to change my look! Nothing too drastic, but just dressing a bit better and starting to wear a bit of make up to try and make myself feel a bit better.

At the moment I wear absolutely no make up whatsoever. I have no idea where to start. Obviously I don't want to go from wearing nothing to full make up as I worry that may look a bit daft.

Can anyone help me out? What do you wear? What brands/products do you recommend & which ones should I avoid?

Of course, I want to do all of this as cheaply as possible and it going to take some time.

Thanks in advance :o

Can you describe your colouring and age group please?
If you have fair eyelashes, I'd start with a basic mascara, makes a huge difference.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm 24, and my skin is fairly pale but eyelashes etc are dark.

welcome aboard the makeup train!!! lol...

I love makeup my - when my friends come to stay they bring nothing with them as they know they will be ble to use whatever they need at my place!!! opps...

    So where to start...

Do you hve good skin? Have you seen some makeup looks U'd like to copy?

Have you seen some tutorials on youtube?

I agree a mascara is a good place to start, maybe a lipgloss in a neutral colour aswell?

This lady is famous for her tutorials - and has had a slot on This morning!

Cheap products can be as good as expensive ones - so it's a bit of a trial and error as to what you prefer, some colours are stronger and texures are different.

    Keep asking questions x
  • Hi Yorkie, I agree with the other posters, mascara and lipgloss are a great place to start, you could try a tinted moisturiser as well. They give very light coverage and there are some very reasonably priced ones available.
www.makeupalley.com is great for independent product reviews and worth checking out before you invest your hard earned cash,

    good luck, xx

    Thank you hot.chick :)

My skin is O.K I would say. I do get the odd breakout of spots on my chin but not very often, and my skin is not really dry or particularly greasy. So pretty average!

Those tutorials look really helpful, I'll have a proper look a bit later. Thanks for the link.

The only mascara I have used is a Natural Collections one from Boots I got when I was about 16, I think I may still have it somewhere :o

    Thanks again for the advice.

No! Mascaras should only be used for 6 months then binned. Everytime they touch your eyelashes they will pick up micro germs and dust etc and then "breed" when you put the brush back.

Look at brands such as Boots 17, Rimmel. Marks and Spencer also have a nice range of shadows, lipglosses, light foundations etc for £2.50 each.

Once you start wearing make up you need to have a proper routine for removing it all at night. Again there are many "budget" brands which are fine - look at Boots own makes for example.

Eyebrows - are they a nice shape which frame your eyes well, or do they need a bit of a tweeze to remove straggling hairs ?

Take care not to use too dark a foundation, and feather it out near the jaw to avoid a "demarcation line" between your jaw and the lighter skin on your neck.

    Good luck !

Don't worry, I wasn't about to start using it, I think it may be pretty clumpy by now anyway :p

I do need to tweeze my eyebrows every now and then but generally they are pretty good shape. They just need tidying up occasionally.

    Thanks for the reply.

Take your mascara into the Clinique counter at Boots, they are giving a sample one of theirs in exchange, very MSE :D

Your opening post could have been written by me, although, I'm a bit older.
I too have decided to try and smarten myself up and start wearing make up regularly.

I now wear eyeliner on my lower lash line and some mascara and a neutral lipstick.
It's quite amazed me how many people have commented on how I look (I musty have looked dreadful before)

On the dressing better, my turning point was getting a decent bra, clothes do hang so much better. ;)

You could have a look at ELF who sell bargain makeup. Like you have said it can be a bit much to go from no make up to a full face with the paranoia that people think you look like a drag queen lol.

I would start with mascara and lip gloss like others have said. If you skin is ok don't bother with foundation. I rarely wear it and find it easier to take care of my skin than to use foundation to cover it up.

A light reflecting concealer is a good idea to bounce the light off any red areas or dark circles (again these can be picked up very cheaply - lidl and aldi sell them and loreal now have an eye cream in a rollerball format that has colour in it.

You should be able to get the basic kit for under £10 until you feel a bit braver and join the ranks of us who have buying premium brand make up as a guilty pleasure. Places like halfpriceperfumes have lots of £1 makeup so you can build up a kit quite cheaply while you experiment.

For me, day wear makeup is about making me look like I have less flaws and night time make up is a bit more theatrical. A wee bit of this and that to enhance what is there rather than applying a mask of make up.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!
