  • I'd start with a few key easy to use products so you still look like yourself but just how you would on a good day after lots of sleep etc.

    - Tinted moisturiser/skin prep. I recommend Clarins Beauty Flash to even out the skin. Superdrug Instant Radiance or Boots Natural Collection tinted moisturiser are good budget versions.
    - Mascara. black if you have cool/blue/pink toned skin, brown if you have warm/olive skin. Just seems to make you look more "polished". You don't need to spend much money on this. I like Tesco Barbara Daly or Mabelline.
    - blush. A sheer gel is easiest to use and looks good on naked skin or over moisturiser.
    - sheer lip colour. You could try a lip gloss (Rimmel do good cheap ones, they look scary in the packaging but look lovely & natural on the lips) or a tinted lip balm to start with.

This would give a good basic look which you can't go wrong with. ELF have good cheap products to play around with. www.bylaurenluke.com has great reviews and how to videos

Thanks for the tips girls, it's really appreciated.

I will definitely follow the advice and start with some mascara and nude lipgloss, maybe go from there. To be honest, I am absolutely petrified of all this. The clothes & make up. I don't really know what I'm doing with any of it so all this advice is really helping.

Thanks again & anymore tips, please feel free to share :)

  • Don't be scared, make up can be SOOOOO much fun. Just start with some basic, neutral, easy to use products then build up when you get the confidence. I was a complete make up virgin a few years ago (my first attempt had brother saying "you look like a transvestite with black eyes") so we all have to start somewhere!

could you treat yourself to get your make up done professionally first of all to pick up some tips? The sales counter staff would do it for free but with a hard sell or a beautician would charge around £20 or so for to do it as a consultation. If you did that and they helped you pick which products you needed it could pay for itself in avoided mistakes and dodgy impulse buys.

if you want to start small you could try just the lip gloss and gloss up your finger then use it to "brush/sweep" upwards on your eyelashes and along your eyebrows will darken the colour and if they're already black will give the appearance of mascara. might be a good starting point if you're not used to it.

if you do go for mascara the best selling one worldwide is the maybelline with the pink bottom green top bottle, does the job, available everywhere and not too expensive.

Or you could host a body shop party and get a makeover done on yourself and could buy the products you like with the money you get to spend as a result of their purchases.

I dont think lipgloss is very good for a beginer personally, it can be sticky, messy and needs re-applying often.
    My basic makeup routine is
-concealer, a rimmel stick that I dab on spots, dark bits etc
-foundation Clinique Superbalanced (had it matched to skin tone in boots)
-Bronzer, just a cheapy from superdrug, use instead of blusher but dont go mad!)
-Eyeliner (I use black liquid, but it takes some practice. Get a brown pencil and experiment with it, if your line is to thick smudge with a damp cotton bud)
Mascara- as already mentioned this makes a massive difference, choose brown black at first, wipe the wand on tissue before you apply and you cant go wrong. I use rimmel (pink tube green lid)

When you get the basics, try adding really bright eyeshadow, or a dab of bright pink blush on the apples of your cheeks.

Get yourself a lovely makeup bag to keep all your goodies!
(oh lips forgot to say, I hate lipstick, and gloss. I just use a moisturing lip balm, and lightly line my lips withh lippencil, in the same colour as my natural lip colour)

i agree about the lipgloss, I don't use too much make-up but that's one thing i steer clear of as it's just too messy and sticky, and I don't personally like the look of it myself!
the rimmel hide the blemish consealer stick is amazing, I have sworn by that for many many years (as I am one that is/has been prone to the odd spot here and there!)
try browns for eyeshadows first maybe? a bit of black eyeliner is always nice too teamed up with black mascara :)
i don't personally wear any face make-up so couldn't help you on that!
...a tinted lip balm may be nice?! a subtle difference on your lips, or maybe a lipstick that isn't too far off your lip colour for a bit more of a 'make-up' look? :) ..x
  • i have always found any of the Benefit make-up assistants very helpful and never really do the hard sell bit at the end. i am sure any of them would be more than happy to give you hints and tips while having a free make-over...

There are lots of kinds of lip gloss and formulations have moved on from them being either sticky or gloops.

    FYI...

Lidl do a rather inexpensive range of makeup, with has had very good reviews, their gloss is never gloopy or sticky, and comes with a hoof applicator with helps it go on lovely, and I love thier mascara and concealer.

If you have one near you well worth checking it out

    :)
