    His insurance will pay all the third party's costs (it will go down as your son's fault). Although no damage wa apparent at the scene, it may be that there is hidden damage, and there is always the possibility of whiplash!

    If not protected his NCD will go down by 2 years from its present level (and none will be awarded for the current year).

    If he doesn't make a claim for his own car then he won't have to pay any excess, though it sounds as if his repairs will be expensive so he maybe will want to make a claim, meaning all he would have to pay is his excess.

    The loss of the NCD plus a premium loading will mean his insurance will go up a lot at renewal.
