my mum had a basic sky box,and she wanted something to record on,a friend sold her a sky+hd box really cheap,we have set it up,and she can get all her channels she subscribes to,but she can't record anything,does she have to inform sky to do something,to enable her to record

Yes,
The card needs to be paired to the box so you will need to call sky to get the recording activated on the box.
As she has swapped a standard box for a HD & therefore will only have one feed from the Sky dish,she'll only be able to record what she watches.0 -
thanks for that will it cost her anything for sky to do that,and if she wanted to record something she wasn't watching,what would she have to do ?2013 wins..... Disney on ice VIP tickets...amazon Kindle0

Costs nothing to pair the card.and if she wanted to record something she wasn't watching,what would she have to do ?
She would have to get someone out to install another cable from the LNB on the dish. She may even need another LNB depending on what is there at the moment.0 -

Further to my last,the doesn't appear to be a option to switch the 2nd power supply on with the new EPG for the HD,so I'm assuming they are already on.
.Also make sure the cable for your moms second TV is in the correct RF output on the back of the Sky box.
If you have the old EPG,on the remote press;
Services
4
0-1-Select.
You should be in the installer menu.Go to the RF output,set to 'on' & save settings.0 -
