My Grandad.. and ginger wine?

When I was a kiddiwinkle (30 now) my Grandad would make a big batch of 'ginger wine'. Now I have no idea if it was alcoholic or not and really not bothered, just wanting to recreate a Christmas tradition in my house.
I remember he would start it off from a little bottle and decant into any old empty bottle he could and shared it round the family.
Does anyone have the foggiest what I'm talking about to help me relive some of my childhood with me Grandad

Only suggestion I have about this is to check out the Crabbies website. Their products are very popular up in scotland See below extracted from their website. Since it has been made from the same recipe for many years it may be similar - I am not affiliated to this company in any way but I do love their products. Hope this helps. I cant post a link to their site but if you do a search I am sure you will find them.

You buy a wee bottle of yuletide extract from the Co-op to make this, they also have a blackcurrant version, I think you just add sugar and water. This was a winter must-have in our house growing up, steaming mug of this fairly helps the sore throat!RIP Iain

Yeah my dear old dad used to make this too - I wasn't too keen but my DS loved it. I was only thinking of this the other day too.
Does anyone know how to make it and what will I need. My dad used to make (proper) wine too so used to sterilise the bottles and stuff, do I really need to do that?Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

I know you can buy "Stones Green Ginger Wine from most places. It's particularly good with whisky on a very cold day.I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

My local chemist sells the little bottles of ginger cordial, you have to boil it up with sugar. It's a little brown bottle like a medicine bottle? It looks a bit like this one but it's cheaper in my chemist, only about £2ish.

2 1/2 oz root ginger 3 1/3 lb sugar 2 tablespoon's of honey juice of 3 lemon's and 2 gallons [16 pints] of water Bruise the ginger well and put in pan with 3 pints of water. Bring to the boil and simmer for half an hour. Put sugar,honey and lemon juice in a plastic bucket/bowl whatever you'v got that hold's about 18 pint of water Pour on the ginger & water and stir well. Boil the remaining water and add to the other ingredient's. Leave for 24 hour's. After that you can strain and bottle it. Can be drunk at once, or it will save for a few week's. Hope this is the kind of thing your looking for, it's the recipe my Gran used back in the 50's.£71.93/ £180.000
