Please help, I was wondering if someone could help, not sure where to put this, so thought would try here, we are having problems with our phone line we are getting a double sound when we speak, friends on the other side cannot hear it all the time, it is not all the time but quite a lot, it is getting very annoying, we have bought new phones as we thought it was the old ones playing up, and it is still doing it with the new panasonic ones we have got. We don't want to pay BT to have a look if there is something we can do ourselves, many thanks.

First of all you need to carry out the steps I outlined above. That will narrow it down to an interior or exterior fault. If it is an exterior fault, then it's on BT's side.If the phone is still odd when you have it connected into the test socket, then you need to call BT.

Sorry, only just managed to get OH to do this, followed the steps you outlined above, and the phone is still very much playing up, it sound like I am echoing, we are using Panasonic digital cordless phones, but it is not all the time that it has an echo just say every other time. Is this a problem with the socket, as BT have said it will cost £127.00 for them to come out and look at it. We have changed the filters for the broadband aswell.

No, as already explained, if you have plugged into the BT test socket using a known good handset and the fault is still present, then it is on BT's side of the network and they will not charge you. All they have told you on the phone is that if they come out and if it is then found to be a user fault then, you would be charged. The only exception is if the damage was found to be user-inflicted, i.e. if you cut through the BT cable.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

BT Can only charge you,as Mac has stated, if the fault is on your side & not BT's.I got a charge for Skitlass reversed reversed because of this.Basically BT Openreach will charge BT of the work & BT are trying to pass the charge onto the customer.I suggest you read the link below & use this to argue with BT.When the engineer calls, insist on a copy of the engineers report & make a note of his name or crew number so you can trace it back to him.
Do I have to pay for a fault repair?

We can repair many line faults at the exchange or on the network. Others require a visit by a BT engineer. There is no charge for these repairs. We will only charge you when one of our engineers visits your property and finds that the fault could have been fixed by you. For example, if your phone is broken or has been left unplugged.
